The last 2 years he has had 3 boring bland male acts : craig, marcus and kye, 2 of my least fav contestants ever chris and frankie, and when he does pick talent e.g caroline, melanie and james michael they all leave in the first few weeks... i have never seen any mentor with worse acts and none had any potential to sell records  get rid of him...

I personally think he did well in his first year... I loved Marcus and Craig (and not just because I am also from Liverpool) hated Frankie but hey ho. This year, I think he and everybody knew that he wasn't going to win, he to me had the weakest category, 3 out of the 4 he chose just did not connect with the audience and Christopher connected with some of the audience, he obviously had a strong fan base.

I think, had Gary been given the groups one year, he would have tore the roof off that place and won, just like Tulisa did with the groups, she knew what being in a group was all about so she could put that into mentoring them. Gary is a good mentor/judge but unfortunatly, this year he was given a category who found it hard to connect with the audience. Come on, he did come 3rd, not a bad place to come for an X Factor judge, better than Tulisa anyway.

I would have to say yes, certainly as a judge anyway.
I was quite excited to have someone on the show who was not only a proper singer/songwriter, but someone who had done the whole boyband thing too. A perfect fit.
But I don't think I've liked a single thing he's ever done on the show. He drags everything down to a snail's pace, plus he's very controlling and manipulative, and has a very 'do as I say, not as I do' attitude. He likes to take the high road when the other judges criticize an act, but when he smells blood he's more than happy to close in for the kill and crush the confidence of an act he wants out. His sheer hypocrisy drives me mad.

As a mentor he's not done too bad though. He managed to drag mediocre Marcus all the way to the final 2, and managed to cover up his embarrassment of having Chris as his only act left.

Whilst I have no doubt that his ability to write really good songs for Take That (only Take That - his efforts aside from these are quite dreadful) makes him (on paper) the most 'qualified' judge ... he has without doubt proven to be the most scripted, predictable, boring judge ever.

I do feel he puts his heart and soul into mentoring ... but due to his own lack of charisma - the only quality he can pass on is the ability to send a glass eye to sleep.

No.

It does kind of annoy me though that as he'll more than likely be leaving next year he'll never have had the Groups...the one category he obviously should have had at least once during his time on the show. As another poster said had he been given the Groups this year I think they'd have done much better, or any other year for that matter.

Really hope he stays on if Simon doesn't come back, not only because he's the next best thing, but because I want him to get the Groups.

Gary - Groups
Nicole - Girls
Sharon - Overs
Louis - Boys

I actually think he was a good judge and mentor. He just had the worst category - some dreadful acts. He was very envious of Nicole's category and would have loved to have worked with James I think.

Gary suits his own agenda on the show, he'll either praise or criticise an act to suit himself and his category - this I don't like.
I much prefer the guy who bantered back and forth with Rylan than the guy who tried to be Mr Nasty or the one who got a cheap laugh at Tulisa's expense. He's very inconsistant for me.

Yes he is.

No wait, there was that other...

Brian Freedman. He was the worst.

Actually, no.

Gary is worse.

He picked some of the blandest contestants to go through to the live shows. It's not that they aren't talented, Frankie Cockozza aside, it's just that they're all so dull and uninteresting. Gary is very talented and gave good critiques a lot of the time but he didn't get the concept of The X Factor. He took it all a bit too seriously and forgot that people like to be entertained. He had a tendency to get personal whenever he or his acts were criticized which wasn't endearing. I think his heart is in the right place but he wasn't a good fit for X Factor.

Do you honestly think that Gary had control who was picked for the show?

I think he had some imput if not the final decision. I don't think they'd have got him to sign up otherwise. I don't generally buy the party line about the judges choosing the acts but something tells me Gary would've had some sort of a say.

simply put - no. not even close.
as a judge his critiques are fantastic. he's generally the one who will give back honest and actually useful feedback, and generally keeps fairly regular. the bit where he falls down in that respect is concerning his own acts, but all the judges praise their own acts to the high heavens anyway.
as a mentor, he's generally picked quite good acts, bar frankie. i liked craig and marcus a lot last year, and this year he had probably the worst category but still picked talented people. they just seemed to not have a great connection with the public, but the overs category rarely does (unless a joke act or very very young ala olly murs).
and both his years on the show he carried an act through to the final...

there are quite a few much much worse mentors/judges than gary. i didn't much rate sharon, and while cheryl was an ok mentor, she was imo a terrible judge. she gave rediculously bad critiques. louis and tulisa are both terrible. tulisa may have won last year, but she had the strongest category this year and the long-time early favourite to win in ella, but she didn't even come close to making the final...
on this years panel, gary and nicole have been the strongest.

Yes. He holds double standards and I'm sure that he would be very harsh on Maloney had he not been the mentor. I like how he didn't sit on the "head judge's seat" anymore (and the wonderful Nicole did).

Gary was terrible this year but I am going to let him off as he's had a tough year off screen. Tulisa on the other hand is abysmal. I hope she gets axed. I will win the olympic gold 100m backstroke before an act of Louis' wins, but he's X factor furniture so will probably stay. Nicole saved the show for me, I have a feeling she won't be back next year though .

are you forgetting that Louis did win once with Shayne Ward back in 2005?

I should have phrased that differently, I meant to add 'again' to the end of that sentance.

Anyways, shayne ward? What happened to him? Is he still alive? #totallyforgetable

Gary is definitely not the worse judge, he's one of the best. Last year two of his acts lasted a long time and even Frankie was never voted off by the public and one of his acts came second. This year one of his acts made the final again and came third. He beat the girls and the groups so he can't be worse than Tulisa and Louis

Most definitely, he's such a drone and would make a great bedtime story reader to get the kids nodding off fast.
He's full of self -importance and he's manipulative.

I like Gary Barlow, but I don’t think he’s any better or worse a judge than any. I think he toes the party line (e.g. putting Frankie through to the live shows last year – what makes us think this was his decision?). I think he enjoys playing the pantomime villain though when the live shows start, and I quite enjoy it myself. I will miss him if he isn’t back next year, though I’m sure that somebody else (Simon?) will fill his role.

As for your comments about his contestants, OP - that is your opinion. Like you, I also liked Melanie and Carolynne, but I also quite liked Kye as well and Craig is one of my favourite contestants ever.

I love Gary when he's not on the XF, but as a judge I find him humourless and completely lacking in self-awareness. He's been marginally better this year but not by much. I hope he doesn't come back for another series.

He takes himself way too seriously. Which is like the opposite of Louis.
