Well, we won in extra time, so I got that wrong. The midfielder, John Swift, was impressive throughout extra time, he was everywhere and created the winner.

Worried about the game today, just looks like one where we will drop points... Unfortunately Spurs and Arsenal are already winning. I hoped Swansea would give spurs a good game.

Hate to say it, now that Arsenal have nothing else to play for i think they will put on a really good run of form and end up placing 3rd or 4th. I think its between us and Spurs for the final spot...

To me this is the most important game of the 3 this week yet we play a weakened team.

It is unfortunate having the cup semi final on Monday, and then Europa QF on Thursday. And I hate seeing the FA Cup being downgraded.

BUT, yes, this league game needed full attention. Ludicrous selection, play best team and then see how they come out of it.

And that's Southampton back ahead again.

Benitez can gamble to try amd win on all fronts, he's not there if Chelsea aren't in the Champions League next season.

Another bad result today, could see this coming when i seen the team picked. You play one match at a time not be thinking of the next match. Can't see why you leave your best players out of the team Top 4 looking a bit dodgy now.

Have said it before was never one for getting on a managers back but to tell the truth can't wait to see the back of Rafa. Roll on May.

The game Monday in my mind is the least important.
Really in danger of missing the top 4.

Agree with this.

Am thinking Rafa really doesn't care were we finish in the league as he will not be here. But a cup win on his CV looks good for him.

Not really surprised after i saw the team sheets. Incredibly disapointing. Apparently Mata is injured and doubtful for Monday too...

Agree with everyone else, the league should be the number one priority. Anything else in the cups is a bonus, but we really shouldnt be focusing on them.

I think he's looking at the bigger picture. His next job.

Yea i think this as well. A cup win will look good on the CV but finishing top 4 means nothing to him as he will not be here.

Just who will have him??

Not any club that wants to win anything of significance anyway.

Ahh yes, going to a club that cannot win anything significant, yup, a perfect fit really.

Chelsea can't win the league, but they can win at least one cup. Given that he's out whatever happens, it's not hard to understand why Benitez prioritises winning a cup.

And that's why he shouldn't be there.

I'm no Benitez fan but you can't really blame him. He's off whatever happens between now and the end of the season so he might as well look to add a trophy or two to his tally. It's a no brainer really. Di Matteo did exactly the same thing in prioritising the cups at a similar stage last season too. I suspect a lot of it comes from Abramovich anyway demanding silverware first and foremost.

Theres a world of difference prioritising the CL to prioritising the useless Europa league.
Even if we scrape it Monday (unlikely) we wont beat MC, and in any case whats the point of winning the FA cup (again) if were not in the CL?

^ Didn't Di Matteo also favour winning the FA Cup over finishing 4th in the league too? You only have to compare the team selections vs Spurs/Liverpool in the cup against the Arsenal/Liverpool league games for example.

I'm not knocking Di Matteo for doing that, but Benitez is really not doing any different.

Aah but the big difference is what you get from winning the CL. You enter it again.

Benitez...
"I think that you could see that in the first half we didn't have the intensity we were expecting."

Translation: We were a total disgrace in the first half, and lucky to be only 1-2 down. There is simply no excuse for the lack of effort that was shown.

"We improved in the second half, made more chances, but still we didn't make the right decisions in the final third."

Translation: At least we tried in the second half, but my team selections meant we didn't have the quality to make anything out of the chances that were created.

"But at least we were there and made the chances."

Translation: I haven't a clue what to say really. Still, only a few months to go and I'm out of here. Who have we got next ?

I was talking to someone who went to the game, he said the first half performance was as bad as he's ever seen from a Chelsea team. It's one thing to be outplayed by a really good side, you can accept that. But he said the total lack of effort in that first half made him feel ashamed.

I lol'd.

It was a pretty poor performance from us. I could only laugh when Cech kept pumping the ball up the pitch - we lost possession EVERYTIME. Torres can't hold up the ball to save his life; if we wanted to keep booting the ball up the field at least put Ba on! But what does the tactical one do?, oh that's right he puts Yossi on for the last few minutes when we were chasing a win.

I get that, but forget about the Champs League vs the Europa League for the moment. The point I was making in the post that you quoted is that Rafa is getting flak for prioritising the FA Cup game over this weekend's league game, when it's not really different to what RDM was doing last season at a similar stage in the same competitions. Regardless of our involvement in the Champions League he still prioritised the FA Cup over the league.

Returning to your point though, RDM took a massive gamble that we could still qualify for the CL by winning the competition. It paid off but easily may not have. Rafa's gamble is that we can compete for the cups and have enough in the tank to finish Top 4. What i will say is we're in a better position to get it than we were at this stage last season where we weren't even in the Top 4 when RDM decided to more or less write-off the league.
