As I recall, there was no 'bidding war' for Van Persie. Us and City were in for him. Do you really think that we'd have got him if it had just come down to an auction?
We paid a big fee, for somebody in his position, because Arsenal would have rather not have sold to us, or City. Ultimately they had to sell him, because of him being in the last year of his contract, but they still played hardball and got a decent price. That's all that I'm saying that we should do with Rooney, except that we're in a stronger position than Arsenal were, because he has longer left on his contract.
And I'm amazed that you know exactly who's in for him. You must be well connected. If you're just basing that on speculation, then you seem to have forgotten that he's also been linked with PSG, Barcelona, Monaco and Bayern Munich.
