Nick Cotton gay plot.

Would this have been a good storyline? I don't think it would have worked well at all. Interesting article. |

I couldn't imagine it would of been just cause Lofty and Nick were so different character wise.

It could have been interesting. Would Nick be interested in Lofty? He was dull and boring. The only scenes I remember of his were when he broke his spectacles.

Not only would it be very weird for two straight men, who had never shown any signs of interest in men romantically speaking to suddenly both turn out to be gay, even though they obviously didn't realize they were untill well into their adult years, they are nothing alike, not even in a sense that one is the type of person who may appreciate another type of person and vice-versa.
Altman was right not to want to do, what a daft idea! |

Surprised that he was written out of the show for not wanting to do the storyline. It sounds like it would have been a bad move to turn him and Lofty gay, I just don't see how it would have worked.

As others have pointed out- Nick and Lofty waking up one morning and fancying each other is very random, I'm surprised Julia thought this would be plausible.

It would have been a terrible idea because Nick was not gay and neither was Lofty. I think the EE producers were probably just desperate at the time to be the first soap to have gay characters. They waited until 1986 (I think) when Colin moved into the Square. I remember his boyfriend Barry shocking Dot in the launderette by admitting that the sheets he was washing were from his and Colin's shared bed.

I don't think this storyline would have worked - Lofty was always scared of Nick, and it wasn't as if either of them had ever shown any sexual interest in each other.
Thinking back, I remember there were rumours at the time that Den's secret 'mistress' was going to turn out to be a man - that might have worked, as there was always something about Den that suggested still waters ran deep. |

There's no way this would have worked. It wreaks of desperation and I'm glad it never went ahead. It's for the best they waited until Colin joined to do a gay story. I never like it when previously established characters switch from straight to gay. It never rings true.

Would have been catastrophic. Saying that, I do agree that killing Ashley off was a huge mistake and Nick the panto villain from 08-09 was a trainwreck. So yes, they ruined the Cotton family. Nothing, however, could have prepared me for Revolting Rose and Angry Andrew.

![]() Three prime time Australian soaps on mainstream commercial networks - Number 96 (1972-1977), The Box (1974-1977), Prisoner (1979-1986) - had already debuted with gay male or lesbian characters as main regular original cast members. |

A sexual relationship between Nick and Lofty would have been very controversial in the 80s and could have been interesting precisely because both characters identified as heterosexual (and were perceived as such by the audience although Lofty never convinced me; he was very much a-sexual)
After all, one doesn't have to be gay (or identify as such) to have an affair or fall in love with someone of the same sex. I can't quite picture Nick and Lofty as a romantic/openly gay couple but Nick would most certainly be the type to have his wicked way with Lofty

I've recently seen the first year of EE and it wouldn't have been too difficult to 'turn' them gay. Neither of them had been established as heterosexual - Nick was a bad boy and manipulated Lofty. If the article is referring to the first year when he was written out just before Christmas, then it was within the first 90 episodes of the show.
At that point they could have done almost anything with Lofty and Nick, neither of them had had huge development by this point. Looking back now, it seems ridiculous, but at the time, it wouldn't have been a huge character change necessarily. |
