Paul McCartney and Nirvana

Is this a joke?

A spokesman confirmed that Foo Fighters’ singer Grohl recently asked McCartney to come along to "jam with some mates”. They were joined by Novoselic, 47, and guitarist Smear, 53, and McCartney suggested they “just make something up”.

He told The Sun: “I didn’t really know who they were. They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said ‘Whoa? You guys haven’t played together for all that time?”

“And somebody whispered to me ‘That’s Nirvana. You’re Kurt.’ I couldn’t believe it.”

Oh dear

Long-time Nirvana fan here, and I shudder to think how cringeworthy this spectacle is going to be!

At least it's for a good cause.

I hope Paul is in good voice, I couldn't bear to see my favourite musician of all time from my favourite band f*ck up on this big a scale...again.

Not only could he make himself look bad but also the Beatles since he is very much representing them these days.

Paul and Dave are good friends and they've all written a song together. Should be good.

Another case of how the media can be misleading. From what I read, they are performing together at a benefit concert but Paul isn't singing Nirvana songs.
He may have said I'm Kurt as a joke, but of course the media will report it as he was serious and he's trying to actually be Kurt fronting Nirvana.

The media are a bunch of pillocks aren't they?

A possible setlist I would like to see Macca perform:

Back In The USSR
Lady Madonna
Here. There and Everywhere
Too Much Rain
Live and Let Die
I Saw Her Standing There
Helter Skelter
Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End

Dave Grohl and the Foos do a good cover of Band on the Run and Mother Nature's Son.

I could imagine:

Band on the Run
Jet
Mother Nature's Son
My Valentine
Helter Skelter
New Song

Ah yes that's right, can't believe I forgot. Replace either Lady Madonna or Helter Skelter with BOTR then.

About sums it up. Dave has played with Paul before, and this seems a good ideA.

It's just Paul McCartney playing with the members of Nirvana, not quite how the media are portraying it. Paul played with Dave Grohl at Anfield in 2008, The Grammy's in 2009 and The Grammy's 2012. Grohl also sang Band on the Run at a tribute to Paul at the White House in 2010, Maybe I'm Amazed at The Kennedy Centre Honours McCartney tribute in 2010 and more recently the Foo Fighters performed Jet at the MusiCares Person of the Year 2012. They are also rumoured to have got together in the studio to make some "garage music".

They are good friends, just a case of the media blowing this out of proportion.

As others have said, I hope Paul is in good voice. Things can't get much worse for him than the two massive screw ups this summer.

I'd like him to do something a bit more unusual but I know it'll probably strictly be hits at a show like this.

I quite liked the song actually.

the song was performed very well...a real rocking stomp...mccartneys voice suits the rockers far more than the ballads..infact i prefer him playing guitar or bass than sitting at the piano singing one of his trademark tunes in a less than perfect 70 year old voice.
but last night he rocked..his slide lead guitar work with the nirvana boys was very cool...infact the nirvana/macca 'come together' was also cool and done very tastefully....no reworking of old songs just a bunch of highly talented rock legends having a jam on a new song that is pretty good and very authentic....the first of a few ' mccartney/grohl' compositions yet to surface is the rumour.

So hope its true, Macca still rocks out, reminded me of Highway off his Electric Arguments album.

He's supposed to have been in 'Dave's garage' recently doing some songs.

Paul was f*cking great! I feel sorry for doubting his ability after the Jubilee/Olympics concerts but he's still got it!

im glad you are able to admit it.....its true macca was pretty woeful at the olympics and nothing special at the jubilee either...i thought his song choices where much better last night and more to please him rather than please the world [or so he thought]..
i think there is still a huge creative spark still in him...as was mentioned above his recentish 'electric arguments' project proved that beyond a doubt....he needs to start concentrating on writing and recording whilst hes still able...and drop the huge money making beatles tribute concerts around the world ....become a genuine artist again whilst hes still fit and well because time is running out at his age

Or singing "I Hate Myself and Want to Die".

Hated the Nirvana collaboration, not my kind of music at all. Reminded me more of Nothing Too Much Just Out of Sight than Highway. Highway is amazing!

Thought Macca did well last night though, much better song choices than either the Jubilee or Olympics and his vocal on Live and Let Die was much stronger than at the Jubilee.

Still woeful compared to Macca at his peak though.
