I was thinking about this today actually. The problem with Stug is not that PJ is a bad actor, it's that the characters of Ste and Doug have no chemistry. I don't believe they're in love, definitely not enough to get married. Maybe if Stendan hadn't happened I could believe it, if only because it would pretty much be a standard romance storyline, but Stendan is such an exemplary storyline. The acting is spot-on and Emmett and Kieron have the best chemistry of any gay pairing I've ever watched (and I've followed quite a few.)
I can't quite put my finger on what makes them work so well. Maybe it's the way Kieron portrays Ste's vulnerability and Emmett portrays Brendan's inner conflicts so well. I don't know what it is, it's just a mix. Stendan just have everything: Lust, sex, love power, control, despair, anguish, need, desire....it's not generic in any way. Plus the slow build up to this point, the way it's kept growing and not been rushed. The audience was never told 'WANT these characters to be together, they clearly belong together!' it's all been shown in the acting. They want each other but they don't, they need each other but they can't have each other, and both for different reasons. The story is so complicated on different levels yet it all comes together so wonderfully. I don't know, the tension between them is palpable even when they're not in the same scene. There's just this sense that between Brendan and Ste, there's always things left unsaid in almost every scene. and it makes you want those things to be said!
It's definitely something special they have.
...sorry went on a rant there!
