Brussel Sprouts or not?

I love them and try to eat them several times a year.

Does anyone else put vinegar on their's? I do and have now got the father in law onto it as well (also put it on cabbage).

Don't like them over done and soggy though.

Love the sprouts! This year, after giving them a few mins on the hob, going to pop them in a pan with melted butter and chopped bacon and stir through. I love them steamed or fancy but trying to make them more appealing to a 5 and 6 year old

I've just had the best sprouts I've ever managed with my sunday meal.

Halved and then blanched for 5 minutes in boiling water. plunged into chilled water and left for a bit. then fried for a few mins with some shredded bacon.

Spot on. Nice and bright green. Decent flavour and texture. None of the usual pale green mush boiled to within an inch of their lives.

Really easy and really good. Don't know quite how I've never managed to get it right before.

Decided to have a chicken dinner tonight so might have a few sprouts with bacon. Makes a change from marrowfat peas.

Chistmas dinner is more than sprouts. It's more than just dinner, although there is the added extra of, for me, turkey, chipolatas, cranberry sauce etc. which isn't usual. But mostly becuase it's a family occasion and completely different than any other roast dinner.

For me Christmas dinner is really just a jazzed up version of a sunday roast.

I usually go to my parents' and we have exactly the same as any sunday, only with the addition of pig-in-blanket and cranberry sauce, and the mandatory bowl of sprouts that mostly go untouched!

Mum used to get a bit stressy about doing the Christmas dinner, until I said "Just treat it like a sunday roast, and I'll do the extras"... which just meant preparing the sprouts and spending 10 mins wrapping bacon around bits of sausage.

Mine have been on since 1st December.

Seriously though, sprouts are lovely, it wouldn't be Christmas dinner without them.

Yes to sprouts! How many realise that they (or any green veg) don't need to be covered in water but can "sit" on about 1 -2 " boiling water, turned down to simmering when adding the sprouts (with lid). Simmering means the outsides won't be too soggy before the centre is cooked.

Here's a nice idea I saw - for Xmas:
Lightly fry some chopped pancetta and add some pine nuts. When slightly toasted add the drained (lightly cooked) sprouts. (Even nicer/prettier if the sprouts are halved lengthways)

I make five sprouts, so everyone gets one.
The choice is then either to leave it uneaten, or eat it first and make a "uuuuurrrgh" face, as if swallowing medicine

I love daft family in-jokes and traditions like that!

I bought them, was only going to make a couple for myself as the kids wont eat them ... i the end the thought of the after effects put me off and i didnt make them

They are lovely if fresh out of the garden like that. But not so nice if they've been hanging about, and bought unfresh sprouts can be quite sour-tasting no matter how you cook them. I didn't have access to really fresh sprouts this week so we had cabbage instead.

It's strange to me that there seems to be this perception that Brussels sprouts are only a Christmas dinner thing. It's just a seasonal vegetable - when I was a kid we used to have sprouts right through the winter, not just on Christmas Day. But then they came from Grandad's garden so we ate what was there!
