Yes there was as the their concern was espionarge with a view to terroism and onto mass murder. Terroism is a capital crime in many American states, including I think (though I'm not sure so please don't bite ny head off) Washington DC where he would have faced trial. Even if the death penalty wasn't an option, they were making no allowances for his illness so he'd have spent decades in prison.
No country will ever extradite one of their citizens for a crime to another coubtry which observes laws which we feel are beyond human rights by our legislation. Therefore, we won't extradite anyone, certainly not a mentally vulnerable man. To a regime which would make him suffer more than our (or EU) law would allow. We wouldn't have extradited someone to Iraq to be executed wither and I bet the US wouldn't either 10 years ago. In fac t I think the only reason the US let Iraq try Hussain is that they knew he'd be found guilty and it was a way to get the blood off their hands. I'd lay odds they'd have found a way to get him to the US if Iraq hadn't had the death penalty. Apparently it is the son of a teacher that's done it. Taken her guns, killed her, gone to her school. Obviously iSsies, mummy lives those kids mire than me, perhaps. Probably developing for a long time and no way to ascertain that when he was a kid, she might have got the licence decades ago. Just het gums out of the homes! But you see the UK and US have a "Special Relationship" wherein by we give them EVERYTHING they want, and they give us nothing lol. ![]() Couldn't agree more about the BIB. Very true. Yes, I heard the gunman was a 20 year old whose parent worked at the school where the shooting took place. If you are gonna be in possession of a gun, then make sure it is somwhere secure (i.e. vault safe, locked room, locked metal cupboard) where the kids can't just steal it and go shooting people. But I agree, the guns do need to be taken out of the homes. I suppose many keep it to protect themselves from burglars or whatever other dangers, but I'd rather risk my life with a burglar with nothing to defend myself with if it means 27 civilians (20 of them children) are saved from a future shooting. |

Back to the episode.
I won't quote it all but Lotty27 I really agree with all your points, and obviously the ones you mentioned by others. I think Derek has been a wasted opportunity. Having heard his name from virtually Carol's first scene with David and Pat in 94 he was a legend awaiting forn. I knew who Jamie Foremanwas, both from his family onnections to the krays, being married to tiffany's mum and work in House of Elliot amongst other things. I liked him as a actor and thought it was a good choice so am sad that they spoilt it by making him a panto villain, shiving him down our throats and now kiiling hin off. I'll miss him, not si much for ehat he was as what he could have been. Abi has always been a daddys girl whilst tanya cossets Lauren. It wasn't as obvious at first but whilst Abi has wised up to Max a little and learnt to stand on her own feet (in the right way - not the getting pissed, running people over, Lauren way) whilst lauren is getiing more and more co dependent on Tanya and alcohol. Also, not being able to keep his snake in his trousers aside (and whatever happened in Manchester), I actually think that Max is a nicer and more moral person than Tan so probably best that Abi prefers him. I love Cora and thought the awkard covo with Ava was perfectly judged. |

There are a couple of very good episodes on american shows which address this subject. The West Wing is one addressing extradition rules where they point out that nearly every country on the 'iffy' extradition list due to the death penaltt are countries in the Axis of Evil - ponder that.
Also, Family Ties, Michael j Fox sit com pre Back to the Future where his 60s liberal parents buy a gum after being robbed to protect their family - they might come in with with a gun when we're here, we have a right to prtoect ourselves. It ends with the dad throwing it away, deciding that he can't live with that in his home around his children even though it's locked away. They will take their chances. Nearly all these school tragedies have a direct link, the killer went to the school, knew one of the teachers. No background check is goiong to find that ticking bomb. What you can do is make it harder fro them to access a grenade. |

Affected by Lola's story.
Nope because it's totally unbelievable. If you were young and vulnerable there isn't much, either in reality or in the fictional world of TV at the moment to give you any faith in social workers being able to support you, when all you see are condemnation, unrealistic snap judgements and bum decisions. If I was a 'bit of a Lola', or even an older mum struggling to cope, I'd be affected enough to worry - perhaps wrongly, but worry all the same - and maybe even feel terrified that the same thing is going to happen to me. What will the advice be on those help lines if anyone rings up and asks if it will? I know it's 'not real', but at the same time it's somewhat irresponsible of TPTB to create, and then develop, this story in such a heavy-handed way just to create 'interesting dynamics' and 'character development' for Phil or Sharon or Shirley or anyone else whose s/l is a deliberate direct result of the Lola story. It's irresponsible to do that without thinking about the impact it might be having on anyone (including social workers themselves) who are part of the system they are portraying.

As much as I wanted you to all do one combined super thread, I must say that I'm very disappointed at the lack of campaigning by you all. Where are the negative ads on your opponents? Where are the campaign promises that you won't keep? I bet none of you have kissed any babies or spoken in a patrinising way to the elderly today, have you? Come on people, you've still got 24 hours, time to step it up!

I agree awards lose their effectiveness. Last 6 months we have had DS member awards, multiple favourite character awards and best storylines. This really went mental after the original top 50 character one. Since then it seems every 5 minutes there is another one. So unless its completely different from those we already had in the last few months how about limiting these to once a year or 6 months if you can not hold it in any longer?

Exactly so wait a year before another one. We do not need another EE related one like I said they lose their effectiveness. And if nobody can think of anything else, I think the board can cope for a few months without an awards which mean less and less the more we do them?
The DS Users one was good but its only been 3 months |

There's a special character one that runs every January for each soap with knock out rounds until the final 2. I think Bertypop does the EE one.
My awards thread is different: Best actor Best actress Best storyline Best episode Best newcomer Best exit Best villian Worst actor Worst actress Worst exit Worst storyline Best return Most improved character Most overused character Most underused character Best child actor Best young actor/actress Best birth Best wedding Sexiest actor Sexiest actress Funniest character Best couple Best family Best writer Character of the Year Dramatic performance of the year Scene of the year Mark 2012 out of 10 (Jan 12-Dec 12) |
