Daddy. It's word that makes me feel so uncomfortable.
That last scene, you can just see that it is Brendan questioning himself. He is begging Ste for confirmation to say that he can change, asking for that little bit of confidence. When he says, this is who I am, I really think his reason for thinking he will never be a better man is because Seamus has never changed. He is still a rude, homophobic, bullying abuser. That is what Brendan has seen himself as and it is only Ste that has ever given him a reason to think otherwise, to overcome that.
It is just the parallels that without Ste, Brendan would be like his father (this is obviously taking out the sexual abuse).
