The Christmas Day edition did as well as ever. Just over 3m is about what you'd expect at that time on NYE. Will be shocked if it's not back next year, certainly for Christmas, and maybe for NY - perhaps earlier like it has been in the past.

Yip it was on for like 6 hours or something, but some in here spend their lives slagging off channel 4, context is irrelevant.

Those longer shows were torture always drove me to Jools Holland's Hootenanny. And remember all of those years of London never having fireworks? Depressingly dull compared to other countries for a long time.

They just want something that is easy for BBC1 Scotland to opt-out of. And less telly watching and more partying on NYE anyway. Maybe they should have opted for a quality repeat instead. The drama Eric And Ernie perhaps.


Don't forget these overnights include ratings for BBC1 Scotland's opt-out. The consolidated rating will be lower. And it won't timeshift very much cos this is the sort of programme you watch live or not at all.

Don't forget Merlin from Saturday 22nd - it has a final rating of 8.45m.

New Year Live -minus all the variety stuff it used to contain-is a real tv event now(the fireworks are absolutely stunning-especially on HD) with what is a very large peak. BBC1 as expected doing very well from Norton onwards. Not sure why ITV just didnt move its soap block to tonight given how subdued ratings are early evening on New Years Eve and given how poor their schedule is tonight.

Is that with +1 DMN?

Also looking at that end of year chart I've realised that once Miranda goes in there Sherlock will be pushed out of the top 20.

Overnights cut off at 2am so it's for the first two hours when there were a fair number of viewers around to see in the New Year. But sure, attack others for stating a perfect reasonable opinion that a 1.4% audience share at any time of day for C4 is a total disaster.

If I ran a TV channel I personally wouldn't bother with "special event" programming that rate worse than the slot average and got beat by digital channels. Sorry it upsets you that I feel this way.

BBC One Scotland peaked with a mammoth 1.41m (77.8%) at midnight last night.



I've added shares above as it makes certain programmes look even more impressive.

This made me giggle looking at the Channel 4 Christmas Eve officials:


A lot of people choosing to record the Homeland repeat in the early hours of Christmas Day! Went from 226k (11%) in the overnights (ie before 2am on Boxing Day) to 787k (27%) in the officials!

Brilliant ratings for New Year Live, pretty sure that was its best peak ever. The ratings for the fireworks have been growing steadily year by year - five years ago it had a peak of 9.7m so it's well up.

New Year Live peaks:

Just to add, BBC Scotland are showing Prince of Persia after 10 on Sunday. Considering BBC1 hardly ever premieres a film in primetime these days, Prince of Persia was a silly choice. Don't see why they didnt just stick on Pirates of the Carribean and premiere Prince of Persia at tea time earlier in the festive week,

Channel 4 would have been competing with quite a few of the music channels last night which would have been screening music for a New Year party. (Don't some of them drop commercials for a few hours around midnight?) Plus, there was Hootenanny on BBC2. But kudos to C4 for making the effort.

Bet they don't do it again next year, though.

If you look at how C4 got on pre-midnight last night and how the BBC got on post-news there's a simple solution.

Good ratings for NYE. Hope NYD can pull off some strong overnights to kick off an uncertain 2013.

If it wasn't for the extra 10 minutes, it would have got it's a highest average as well. I can understand why they extended it though, it's the last time they can, reasonably, get the Olympic montages out.

Still a great average though and an excellent peak.
