They've started showing the trailer a lot over the last few days - I guess they are banking on the idea that Tom Daley is the biggest star on the show so they're marketing it around him. To be fair, the marketing for the first series of Dancing on Alice was pretty low key, and all the trailers only featured Torvill & Dean and didn't actually feature any of the contestants. I'm pretty certain it'll start low, especially with an FA Cup analysis lead-in, but I can see it picking up a bit of steam across the run. These kind of shows often work best when people 'discover' them for themselves as opposed to shoving a massive marketing campaign in everyone's faces.
![]() On a serious note, I think they could be a bit more adventurous with the promotion. They could have at least got a website up and running, put a few training clips on there and speak to the judges and give people who want it an overall feel of the show. The papers aren't even flicking a wet flannel at it at the moment; let alone getting over excited; I'm sure there was more hype around the likes of Britain's Got Talent and X Factor when they launched even if they didn't dive into 10m figures straight away. I also think they really make a mistake with the judging panel as well; why pick Jo Brand when they could have had Peter Kay? ![]() What's working in it's favour is BBC One is quite weak on Saturday; it's only starting five minutes after Britain's Brightest so the latter doesn't have much of a headstart. The football lead in will hurt it, though. |

They havent got enough young good looking males in that lineup. Most of the audience will be female viewers but that lineup isnt serving them, tabloids or magazines well. Only Anthony Ogogo out of the guys has a good body out of that lot. Kenzie and Leonardo Penna are ripped and both were rumoured or took part in the pilot but not in the show anymore. They got a few fattys checked like Omid, Tina Malone and Dom Joly but couldve done with a politician in the mould of Ann Widecome. Something for the fellas with Charlotte Jackon and Jenni Falconer in that lineup. If the show is a success, theyll get better celebs next year. Judging lineup is decent with three experts out of 4: Leon Taylor is playing the "Simon Cowell/Craig RH/Jason Gardiner" role according to people who went to the pilot, Tom Daley and the other bloke will be the nice guys and Jo Brand will make the jokes.
As for Leon Taylor playing the mean role, I can buy that. He didn't hold back on criticising the Olympic divers in the summer so he might make mincemeat out of the amateurs. Tom and Andy are just the 'safe' guys; in terms of personality on the panel I think Leon and Jo will have to carry it. |

I think a lot will rest of Omid Djalli. If he can deliver the 'joke' perfectly it'll gain some hype; if people don't get it the show will collapse entirely. The second heat seems to be lacking an out an out 'joke' character as well - I presume the spot is lined up for Diarmud Gavin but I don't think he'll be able to sell it like Omid or Dom Joly.

Eddie the Eagle will be the 'joke' celeb in the 2nd heat. He'll be diving off the board with his skis on according to a report. Ive never heard of Diarmud Gavin before
.Eddie The Eagle's diving with skis...are they allowing props already?! I suppose that would add a dimension to the show. "And now, diving with a live microphone...". |

On the subject of Splash I don't think the line-up matters and certainly I don't think it'll be its downfall. I have much larger concerns with the format itself not to mention the scheduling of the whole thing.
The biggest problem I foresee here is that its a series of weekly heats. This cuts out the biggest tool a reality show of this nature has for building an audience, namely the notion of progression or improvement. That its a different cast of characters doing a first week dive means there's no continuing hook. We don't know any given week if someone's going to be funny or if someone's going to be good. Its just a list of people the audience has no connection with. Strictly and The X Factor build an audience because people connect with the acts. That's even true with BGT which has heats but has a whole process and narrative behind them that draws the audience in. Scheduling of this is also a nightmare. Five celebrities competing each week and the show is running for 90-minutes. To put that into context that's the same length of time as the first Dancing on Ice performance show the following night. I also just noticed that Vernon Kay is hosting Splash on Saturday and then All-Star Family Fortunes on Sunday night. That seems like over kill. I really cannot see this doing well. |

I fear for "Splash", given ITV's legendary knack for finding amusingly punning names for its never-ending stream of flop shows.
At least they didn't call it "Top Bombing" or "Belly Flop".... |

As long as Tom Daley keeps his kit off, I'm sure ITV and the female demographic will be happy - and the trailers are basically all Tom Daley with his kit off, so it seems promising... |

I have a feeling Africa will win the night for BBC1 tonight - stunning pictures and Attenborough an unbeatable combination.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Cuckoo as a hit last year for BBC Three alongside Bad Education. It did consolidate to 1.28m for the first episode but only 803k for the finale.

Great for EE, a little bit disappointing for the comedies - a fair bit down on last week, particularly MBB. Suggests Lewis will make further in roads.
Superb for Up, well above expectations and easily top film of Christmas. |

EastEnders, proving that ratings don't equal quality.

Actually the darts final probably hit MBB more than Gary Barlow.

I'm sure you are right in your assessment of why ITV expect the show to work - along with the prospect of swimwear malfunctions - and I rather suspect it may hold up better than some predict ... but what will kill it, if anything, will be the length of the show. Ninety minutes? Really?
