I'm glad the Xmas Day ratings are finally out of the way now. Months and months of speculation about the schedules and who's going to win the day - a day also when one rating is looked at in isolation to the rest of year. EE may have won the day, but it the grand scheme of things does in really matter and who even cares when its been posting average numbers for months now?

As for Africa tonight. I really hope it does well. Its the next Frozen Plant IMO. Some breathtaking footage. A stunning piece of television. I'm hoping for 6m tomorrow. I see Robbie's underpredicted again on this show.”

If EastEnders lost out to Downton or even Corrie we wouldn't have heard the end of it

Noticed some of the guys predicting EastEnders wouldn't see any bump still haven't posted

So what you're saying is, as long as EE wins on Xmas Day then the rest of year is irrelevant?

You seem to be happy with Emmerdale "doing the business" for two days a year aswell...

Got to admit that was the first time id seen UP and I absoutly loved it.

A lovely film. As a well known fan of the animated duo Wallace & Gromit, my "cartoon" references earlier were in no way meant to denigrate Up, more to have some fun at Em/ITV's expense.

And Roscoe.

Taking of which...

I'm never happy about EastEnders.

I rarely see it, and wish it had a bit of the warmth and humour that Corrie and Emmerdale legendarily had before ITV turned them into amalgams of EastEnders and Hollyoaks themselves.

I wasn't talking up EE, which clearly isn't the draw it once was, more picking up on your glossing over the 5m or so audience for Emmerdale (again...), whereas if EE takes a dive because of strong ITV competition, we never hear the end of it from you and certain other posters...

Emmerdale has been extremely consistent this year. That's what ultimately matters surely. EE gets a bump at Xmas although not as much as usual in 2012 and where lead to believe on here that's all that matters. It's not. The bigger picture is my point.

Never hear the end of it? Abit rich that Robbie? You post much more than me on here. Usually about The X Factor demise or the endless talk of Xmas ratings...

Excellent work - thanks.

Do you have one for Christmas Eve, perchance? (I don't ask much do I...)

Happy New Year, Roscoe.

You must post on here more often then.

And not just about Emmerdale....

No but the fact is that even when EE goes though a bad spell, the fact that it not only topped the night but beat the compition by some margin on christmas is an achievement

Happy New Year Robbie.

I do post about other stuff as well but you only ever pick up on my Emmerdale points. Just for your reference: I think Emmerdale has had a rather poor year quality wise but ratings have held up ok. The new producer should hopefully get things back on track.

Can't believe it only took you until the 2nd January to rant about +1 channels. It's far more likely people watching Downton on Christmas Day on ITV1+1 were not people who'd watched it earlier on ITV1, but people who opted to watch Downton on ITV1 to allow them to watch other shows earlier in the schedule, most notably EastEnders. I don't see why those deciding to watch at ITV1+1 at 9.45pm should be overlooked when those who watched a recording are counted. I just don't understand why you're pretty much the only person here who can't interpret ratings for what they are - the rest of us do and are intelligent enough to realise that +1 is a factor, hence appreciate the ratings with and without.

Anyhow, it's a nice break from you downplaying Ripper Street as you seem to be shitting yourself that Mr Selfridge might be a hit for ITV.

Exactly - though C5 may be wishing the police had waited a couple of days then stormed the house (though in reality it would likely be an unbroadcast exit through the diary room!) And surely Jim Davidson not being on the show would help ratings anyway - really couldn't see the logic in that signing.

Because we all want to see these...

Christmas Eve 2012 - Live Figures
BBC One
20:15 - Merlin: 5.33m (22.1%)

* new timeshifting record
18:15 - Strictly Come Dancing: 6.64m (31.3%)

19:30 - Call the Midwife: 6.42m (27.4%)

20:45 - Downton Abbey: 6.14m (25.7%)
* final figure was 9.69m (29.8%)

With the live audience, Corrie was not actually a million miles away from winning Christmas Day.

Had Mrs Brown's Boys timeshifted 0.07m or more, it would have set a new timeshifting record - as it was Doctor Who a day later did that. Miranda tomorrow could be the show setting that record.

Gosh, the live figures really are low aren't they - and a lot closer!

It really puts in context the days when M&W or Mike Yarwood were getting 21m on Christmas Day - that was all live viewing, no ability to tape, shift or iPlay in 1977!

(is "to iPlay" a verb? It should be...)

The live figures should be much higher Call the midwife gained 7.3 million overnight on Christmas Day and Doctor Who had 7.6 million for its initial showing. EastEnders won the day with 9.4 million viewers so the low figures are wrong

You have to laugh at those who are gloating that EE beat Emmerdale. That is supposed to happen by a significant margin all the time, it isn't anything to gloat about.

Who was it said this thread was biased towards ITV?
