Ripper Street held on to a decent enough audience against the stronger competition.

Countryfile and Antiques Roadshow are two of the oldest skewing shows on TV. Doesn't mean they should be written off of course, just scheduled appropriately (and they are).”

I'll have to start tweeting about the gorgeous Ellie and her Wellies and get the youngsters watching....

Maybe I am misunderstanding you but Dancing on Ice is a big hitter or it used to be along with the Syco shows and I'm a celeb. At one point it was more popular than all of them and Strictly.

A nice weekend for ITV this weekend then.

Sunday has started well. Dancing on Ice is perhaps lower than they'd like but we'll see how it holds over the coming weeks before making too many judgments about that. Mr Selfridge also off to a rather good start. ITV's concern there may very well be that Ripper Street didn't collapse against it. In fact Ripper Street held up remarkably well. That could be a very close Sunday night battle in the weeks to come. Or Selfridge could rocket from good word of mouth. We'll see.

It'll be interesting to see what impact Call the Midwife has on things in a couple of weeks time. Will it boost Ripper Street? Or will it act as an indirect lead-in to Selfridge? In fact that might very well be one of the reasons why Midwife didn't start this week as a spoiler for ITV's new Sunday line-up. The BBC was concerned it might have too big an audience overlap with Mr Selfridge and didn't want to boost that at the expense of Ripper Street. Better to leave it a few weeks and let Selfridge live or die on its own.

I think the problem is aside from the soaps, ITV has a handful of programme that can grab an audience of 7 million plus (heck even 5 to 6 million is a struggle)

They need to develop stronger programme that aren't relying on viewer phone-in votes. More varied drama, more variety (a la Des O'Connor Tonight) and more comedy)

I'm not the people currently in charge of commissioning get that yet, as they still seem to be obsessed with short term gains

If it stays close to last year's ratings then it's doing okay. Staying level or dipping slightly is a success these days.

Maybe it was Willoughby it was missing as opposed to Gardener. Is the male audience down the most ??

I have a friend who declined to watch because she thought exactly the same - a deliberate ITV copy of The Paradise. She is reconsidering now that I explained the 'coincidence' and that this is a true story but I think it was clever strategy by the beeb in retaliation over Downton getting in ahead of Upstairs, Downstairs and doing that in just as it was getting good and reaching World War Two when it could have come into its own.

I don't suppose our household will be alone and watch all three.

Her indoors watches both Got to Dance and DOI as well and we both watch The Hotel on C4.

Busy night for the Sky+, Sunday.

Other PVRs are available.

I think it's right that Sunday night schedules are the strongest. People need a good pick-me-up ahead of work the next day.

But the older and wiser recognise quality and Mr Selfridge was a good show - faster paced and better written and acted than The Paradise.I suspect it will sell well abroad, too.

Incidentally, it maybe lost viewers but gained share also.

The early start for Dancing on Ice might have had some effect.

This Morning had Jeremy Piven on and they called it 'ITVs new hit drama' but Philip Schofield made no mention of DOIs ratings. JP unsurprisingly confirmed they want to do more series to tell the full story - and - that he plans his own Harry Selfridge style legacy by opening a coffee shop in Neasden. Think that might not have been entirely serious.

Good rating for Selfridge. We wait and see what happens next week. Dancing on ice did like what I was expecting, worst ever ratings. No amount of changes will turn around its fortunes. They could have Ashley Roberts judging naked and it still wont get viewers back.

Have noticed that BROADCAST changed their ratings system, they now incude +1 for everyone. This is what the Grauniad are doing too.

Her breasts couldn't keep men watching The Voice and they got more screentime than on Dancing On Ice.

I think it's neither tbh, its just a tired format where you can pretty much predict the winner once all the contestants have danced. Ice dancing is tough (which is why there is over 4 months of rehearsal instead of 2 weeks on Strictly)and no contestant can really go on a 'journey' like on other shows.

I don't think that is good enough especially as they've cut the number of weeks, number of contestants and running time in order to boost the ratings. Reducing running time and cutting 2 weeks off a show like DOI will mean a significant loss of revenue.

7.89m for the first episode of Ripper Street. It won't see that rating again.

But the second episode rated better than everyone expected. It did well in the face of hard competition;

This is true but I think that even if Mr Selfridge wasn't there Ripper Street would see a dip. I thought the second episode was better than the first personally.

Yes, it rated well. I was unpersuaded by episode 1 and watched Mr Selfridge but plan to give Ripper Street another chance to convince me via i player.

The final Ripper v Selfridge figures will be interesting after catch up is added.

Incidentally, anyone know if ITV are going to show Primeval: New World that starts Wednesday on Watch? Or have they abandoned the franchise altogether. A friend without pay TV was asking if she would ever get to see the spin off.

Superb for ASFF, and for DOI at least the skate-off was up on last year.

CITV peaked with a reasonably higher 563k (6.01%) yesterday at 11:50.

The first Got to Dance episode at 6pm got 685k (2.8%) with a peak of 811k (3.3%) at 6:35pm. The second show afterwards got 738k (2.8%), and peaked with 970k (3.6%) at 19:50.

Anything for Wild at Heart?

Also, any NYD consolidated update?

90% sure that they've abandoned it.

I thought it was easier to watch last night. Then again I hadn't been on the Baileys and egg nog last night...

It's a bit too Garrow's for me. Not at all the super cool sexy drama I had been waiting six months for...

Not really sure how DOI's figures can be spun any other way than disappointing.

The launch show has been the highest rating show for years so for last night's show to be the lowest ever is not a good start and then add in the fact they've cut the length in the expectation higher ratings will cover the loss of ad revenue and having no CTM competition last night then i'm really struggling to see the positives.
