Did wonders for Whitechapel's ratings. That was series one and one of the episodes got 9m in the finals. The One Show also did well the same night too.


Then we got it again the following year in 2010. I think we'll get these winter blasts more often and so some shows will see the benefits. Had the "beast from the east" storm hit the UK last month Christmas ratings would have been enormous!

Before Christmas early afternoons had new double episodes of some holiday home programme - I can only guess it was something meant for weekdays but then ITV decided it wasn't strong enough so burnt it off on Saturdays

I posted this in the soap ratings thread but I thought some of you guys might be interested in it.

December 2012: (overnight average for The Big Three:
Corrie: 8.07m
down 350k y-o-y

EastEnders: 7.62m
down 940k y-o-y
highest monthly average since April

Emmerdale: 6.74m
down 610k y-o-y

Coronation Street had the best month y-o-y.

Emmerdale has had the least decline but has less viewers to lose. The soaps faced Olympics, Euros, Jubilee last year so were bound to be down a bit.

Last year's BDO World Darts final averaged 2.35m (9.4%) overnight from 17:45-20:10 on Sunday 15 January, peaking with 3.63m (12.6%) at 20:00-20:05. There was a massive surge (over 600,000) from the preceding 5 minutes (possibly boosted by people tuning in expecting to see the scheduled 20:00 programme about the Great Barrier Reef.)

The DOI performance show lost over a million week-on-week, but the results show (after the darts) was down about 200k, so it certainly seemed to have an effect.


Difficult to compare as the timeslots have changed, but here are a couple of programmes which were in the schedule yesterday and a year earlier:

Well, this is fairly unscientific, 'back of a fag packet' stuff (my speciality), but it looks at first blush as if Channel 4 have played a blinder in axing T4: their overall figures and more importantly 16-34 audience, share and skew have markedly increased for both of those shows. Of course the particular episodes' popularity and the competition could have played a part (and there are other programmes besides these two) but I wonder if older (but still young) viewers who may have been turned off by the 'teen' branding are now giving the schedule a chance? Further analysis indicates this may be right: the 25-34 audience increased twice as much as the 16-24 audience for The Simpsons year-on-year, and six times as much for TBBT.


Do you mean Monday 2 February 2009? I think that might have been the worst. The One Show had 6.7m, the 6pm and 10pm BBC news over 7m each, and the BBC regional news at 6.30pm had about 9m according to my figures. Eastenders 10.3m, consolidating over 11m. Whitechapel had 8.1m which timeshifted to 9.26m (still only a 31.1% share, which meant the consolidated audience in Whitechapel's timeslot was 29.8m).

Interesting to look at EastEnders in particular. The move to BBC2 for The Olympics didn't help it, but it was still doing poorly anyway. Only one overnight above 10m! Corrie was very robust, even without event episodes the regular episodes were holding up very well. Emmerdale also doing well last year, gets overlooked far too often.

BDO will always do better than PDC because it's on a free channel. If PDC was on BBC2 it'd be enormous. When people talk about darts players they rarely mention BDO players. The whole thing looks very second tier.


T4 had to go, it was trading on its name rather than current performance. The Big Bang Theory is even more popular now and that is what is propping up the early afternoons on Sunday. Will Channel 4 be brave enough and axe Countdown as well?


That was the day. Massive amounts of snow, people stayed indoors and TV was the big winner.

That's surprising. I thought snow days boosted shows far more in 2010 than that.

And just think they spent six figures to carry out research and make idents this poor!

Programmes are the key not rebrands. Rebrands reflect the thoughts of a Controller swallowing PR guff. Most of the time they are not needed.

This definitely shows why the BBC LE Department is so poor. They even take winning formats and screw them up. And they never listen about scheduling. Although it should be pointed out that an Indie did The Voice UK, but the BBC also had input. Why did they put The Voice on in the Summer where it would face football matches and ratings could dip in very hot weather? It's a good job the Summer weather was so poor as the series wouldn't have reached the ratings it did. I'm glad John De Mol had a word with them about scheduling. They also need to make it fun. To get people back to the show they need to have a more fun trailer. One thing NBC and the original version got right.

Thanks Neil - don't you just hate it when facts don't back up your argument! I'd have thought actually T4 would probably appeal more to 25-34 year olds than it would 16-24 year old as those of us in that bracket were basically T4's audience in it's glory days - but then again with the programming not being anything like what it once was it's no surprise.

Plus there was the risk of Nick Grimshaw popping up in between breaks - talking of which anyone know when the next radio figures are due out?

I'd say if they changed their scheduling (ie. next week), then Britain's Brightest could go into Category C, even Category B.

I think that cold snap started over Christmas 2009. I remember the early evening news getting 9m quite regularly and Celeb MM getting 6-7m every night.

The young demographic are actually watching the show - more than can be said of most shows on BBC1/ITV1, particularly entertainment in recent years. Indeed, it was in this category that the ratings rose week on week.

People love to rubbish this kind of stuff. But once they put their anger to one side, they'll realise it's not worth getting wound up about and they'll enjoy it. It's light entertainment and it doesn't pretend to be anything else.

And ultimately, it's better to have millions watch and make fun than have nobody like it and nobody watch it (as is the case for most new entertainment series). Even with publicity, people tend not to stick with things they don't like. The Voice got a lot of stick for its live shows but that plainly didn't bring in more viewers.

I remember quite a debate about that 5.89m regional news figure because it was reported that it was the BBC London news as Barb only reports the individual regional offerings. In a tv region with a total reach of 10m that would have been astonishing. I think the view was that it was a mistake, but I can't remember if we ever got to the bottom of that.

Eastenders seems to be more stable after the christmas period anyhow. Maybe Newman can progress it back into shape. Interesting that it did not plummet down further in 2012 despite a poor year of stories. Hopefully it can now recover.
