More importantly is that people have actually seen this crop of Best Picture nominees. We're still in the first half of January and Lincoln, Django Uncahined, Argo and Les Miserables have already surpassed $100 million at the domestic US box office. Life of Pi is only just short of that ($95 million) and will certainly pass that mark this weekend. That means by the time the Oscar's hit the air this year at least 5 of the 9 Best Picture nominees will have surpassed $100 million domestically. Zero Dark Thirty meanwhile opened strongly this weekend with $30 million so has every chance of pushing toward $100 million come Oscar night as could Silver Linings Playbook. Its currently at $41 million and is widening its release in the run up to Oscar night. Compare that to last year where only one of the ten Best Picture nominees surpassed $100 million (The Help).
