BTW, how do aggregated % shares work? Surely you can't just say, for example, it had 20% on ITV1 and 2% for the repeat on ITV1+1, so it therefore had a 22% share of viewing? That's just plain nonsense.

Wouldn't you take an average if you are going to treat two separate showings on two separate channels as one - so around 11%?”

'Total' channels
Channels with a time shift variant (e.g. E4 and E4+1) are usually available as a 'Total' channel as well. For example, E4 Total will combine the ratings of a programme shown on E4 with its ratings on E4+1 an hour later. The audience figures are added together, so if the programme achieved an audience of 400,000 on E4 at 9pm and 50,000 on E4+1 at 10pm, the audience for E4 Total would be 450,000. The Share figure is calculated using the industry standard of dividing the combined programme audience by total television viewing in the 9pm slot. All schedule information (including start times) on a 'Total' channel will be the same as the primary (non-timeshift) channel, e.g. the E4 Total schedule will be the same as the E4 schedule.

And excluding +1 versus BBC One:

20:00 to 20:30 - 4.32m (18.7%) -> second in slot versus 7.68m (33.1%)
20:30 to 21:00 - 5.71m (25.5%) -> won slot versus 3.94m (17.6%)
21:00 to 21:30 - 5.54m (23.6%) -> won slot versus 4.86m (20.7%)
21:30 to 22:00 - 5.40m (23.3%) -> won slot versus 3.61m (15.6%)
22:00 to 22:25 - 4.98m (22.8%) -> won slot versus 3.72m (17.1%)
22:25 to 22:35 - 4.01m (19.6%) -> won slot versus 3.94m (19.3%)
22:40 to 23:00 - 3.72m (20.7%) -> won slot versus 2.95m (16.4%)

I think for next year they should stick to the same scheduling, because it is not often you get ITV1 win the 22:00 hour. Also, I calculate a 25.7% primetime share excluding +1, must be one of their highest Friday shares this year.

In some people's eyes ITV is beyond criticism on here. Rightly I praise them when they do something well, and I have noticed it's not as trashy as it was a few years ago, but FFS a lot of ITV shows these days are still awful and the ratings say a lot at times.

BBC Four last night...

21:00 - It's Slade: 563.5k (2.4%)
* peak: 731k (3.2%) at 21:40
21:50 - Slade at the BBC: 467k (2.2%)
22:50 - Slade in Flame: 247k (2.0%)

Lots of relief in this thread today that Text Santa did better than last year, but, let's be honest, for what it is, its ratings are all right but nothing great. It rated lower than Sports Relief did in March and that's always been a bit of a ratings underperformer IMHO.

I think ITV would want TS to do better than it did and get much closer to Children In Need in the ratimgs,That's why they moved it to Friday and gave it an hour-of-soap lead-in and drafted in all the stars from their biggest shows to do a turn. But Text Santa hasn't yet seeped into the nation's consciousness and it probably doesn't help that they put it on Christmas when people have a lot of other distractions.

On the other hand, they're moving in the right direction and they seemed to have responded well to the criticisms of the first year and it probably took CIN a few years to find its feet. And if Text Santa gets praised for its content then it might encourage the BBC to make a bit more effort with CIN instead of just going through the motions.

The truth is apart from Downton and the soaps I doubt much will rate better than Text Santa for ITV over the next couple of weeks, so it's a decent way to fill the schedule for a night and raise a bit of cash for charity, even if the figures don't come close to the established charities.

TS did quite well last night and I have mentioned before ITV should revive their telethon.

You also get some uber BBC fans on here. However, I fall between the two and praise/criticise when needed, like Text Santa did a good job last night and ITV are no longer a pushover on Christmas day with three ratings stars.

I was about to say that; it can hardky be claimed that this thread is pro-ITV...or indeed pro any channel beyond a few certain posters.

Text Santa performed strongly and could build through the years if they have the same format and possibly the same scheduling. Coronation Street and Emmerdale both performed well in terms of viewing figures and share though EastEnders looks slightly low in respect of share; I would have expected it to be closer to the 35% mark but that's possibly because of the tougher than usual opposition. The BBC Three repeat did well compared to recent showings. Channel 4 and Channel 5 were somewhat squeezed while, outside Mastermind which recorded a strong figure, BBC Two had a another steady night.

THE CHRISTMAS BUMPER PREDICTION SCHEDULE CAN BE FOUND HERE.

I see now why ITV released the names of the celebrities taken part in the new series of Dancing On Ice so early. They've already started showing their lavish trailer for it.

Tonight (whilst the entire nation is watching the Strictly final on BBC1) ITV have been screening a lot of trailers for their New Season (and also for their Christmas fayre. Lots of trailers, not many adverts). They've also trailed Splash and twice in the last half-hour, they've shown a trailer for a new comedy-drama series, Great Night Out. I have to say it looks a bit ITV2 and I don't see it doing very well in the ratings at all. It was probably pitched to ITV as a sort of TV version of The Hangover.

I think ITV were panicked when CTM dented DOI this year and are terrified of it happening again. Also the way Splash is being promoted suggests that the show could be next year's Red or Black, as it has flop written all over it( viewers are tired of Z list celebs).

Strictly Come Dancing - Series Averages
2004 - ???
2005 - ???
2006 - 8.56m (37.6%)
2007 - 9.05m (38.1%)
2008 - 9.63m (37.6%)
2009 - 9.17m (35.7%)
2010 - 11.07m (40.9%)
2011 - 10.97m (41.0%)
2012 - 10.48m (40.5%)*

* excluding semi-final and final.

All series averages' exclude launch show as well as any Christmas special.

Strictly timeshifts about 1 million - if both episodes last weekend add 1 million, the series average will rise to 10.58m. I think once the final is added on it probably be about 0.1m down on last year but it will be very, very close.

For those who were complaining about the BBC promoting ITV shows when ITV don't promote BBC shows, the current guest on The Jonathan Ross Show on ITV1 is Sienna Miller who this Christmas stars in The Birds, a drama on Boxing Day at 9pm on.......BBC2.

Obvious though, nobody is watching her because she's on at the same time as the winner of Strictly is announced.

A long-winded (at times), but throughly enjoyable Strictly final; the series like wine seems to age better as years go by. That is until the bottle gets empty.

Brucie having a meltdown at the end, deary me!

They also showed a clip of Call the Midwife on Paddy's Show and Telly as well.

Anyone else expecting a bumper BBC News rating tonight? I seem to remember a bulletin a couple of years back getting 10m+ post Strictly final results, that was when we were in the grip of the big snow disruption. Widespread flooding may have a similar effect?

9.71m according to the BARB website. Last year's post Strictly news had 7.82m.

Long-time lurker (3+ years), one of my first posts in the thread.

Cheers, I think the 2010 Strictly final results was the highest rating episode ever which also would have contributed to that I imagine.

Too much is made of BBC/ITV not showing each other's shows. More often than not the channels do have rivals on or show clips from other channels.

Because in real life people watch a mix of many channels, and the producers of chat/magazine shows know this.

Happens every year. Remember when the guy from the boy band won and his bandmates ran on stage to congratulate him and Brucie nearly clobbered them thinking there had been a mass crowd invasion.

Thought it brought a slick and polished series to a shambolic conclusion.

Ridiculously padded tonight, and that has got to hurt the ratings.
