In terms of raw numbers of ABC1 viewers, Downtown Abbey would be my guess.

Not sure which programme has the biggest ABC1 skew, though. Probably something on BBC4.

I think the point about a bus boner (and it's many years since I last got one - a bus that is..) is that it is not induced by the sight of another passenger but by the vibrations of the moving bus carried through to one's seat.

A new drama he mentions is 'The Ark' set in World War One by ex 'Enders writer Sarah Phelps. In the post news 10.35pm slot brand new experimental writers of TV drama will debut their work. Ben Elton and David Walliams sitcoms are for 2013 too.

That's not true. In the series won by Darren Gough and the one won by Tom whatshisface from Holby judges votes counted in the final.

I watched those finals and I'm sure they said the same as this year that judges marks were for guidance only. If judge's marks had counted in either of those years then neither Darren Gough or Tom Chambers would have won.

He's the controller of BBC One so I'd be quite concerned if he wasn't 'aware'.

Everyone knows the audience isn't all pensioners. It's an exaggeration, much like with Corrie, because the audience is particularly old and it has that kind of feel to it (the host is 84 years old!). All TV tends to skew old, particularly BBC1 and ITV1 - with a mean age in the high 30's, X Factor might be seen as young on here but it's only in line with the median age for the UK as a whole.

"Only" 32% pensioners is a pretty high ratio. Latest census stats say the median age in the UK is 39 and 16% of the population is aged over 65.

This is all fair enough - it doesn't matter how old the audience is for the BBC and it suits them because it's easier to get them and the priority for BBC1 is share. It still turns in a decent number of 16-34's as well.


IIRC from the demo breakdowns earlier this year it was neck and neck between Take Me Out and Strictly. TMO won some weeks in 16-34's although I think it fell away a bit and Strictly keep rising, putting it in front.

That worked well for ITV1 and BBC1. Because TMO attracts very few older viewers, it offered BBC1 a bigger audience for Strictly. At the same time, ITV1 made some decent money and served up some 16-34's for advertisers.

How much would ITV love a show that got a 59% ABC1 share?

Good news for all those complaining about the BBC promoting ITV shows too much - today's BBC Breakfast features features on Call The Midwife and the Doctor's new companion. Plugs for two of BBC1's biggest Christmas Day shows.

Meanwhile, the Mirror's big report on tomorrow's CTM says that the second series starts in January, but I don't know if that's firm knowledge or just wild speculation on the Mirror's part. With Blandings confirmed for Sundays from January 13th, I'm thinking that a schedule of Blandings, Call The Midwife and Ripper Street on one night would be serious period drama overload. The Sun's article on CTM doesn't seem to mention series 2 at all.

Jenny Agutter was on The One Show last week and she said CTM would start in late January.

Apologies if this has been raised before, if so I missed it.

Do we still get overnights during the Christmas and New Year periods or are BARB all on holiday ?

Another poor night for ITV. The Cube seems to have now lost all of its sparkle for viewers. I suspect it's heading for the axe after that rating with v little competition.

Another dismal evening for ITV - that's what happens when you put three completely mismatched programmes on one evening, starting halfway through programmes on BBC1. Terrible scheduling. I was actually expecting worse for Ade but Lumley will be a big disappointment for them; I expect they wanted a decent audience for that. At 3.4m (inc+1) The Cube didn't completely disgrace itself but it was hideously scheduled. The fact it grew from 2.7m to 4.1m across the hour suggests scheduling hampered it a bit. Not that it did anything to suggest it deserves more episodes once they've burned the ones they've got on the shelf off though...

Elsewhere aside from Stink it was a pretty underwhelming evening all round, with even the usually reliable Countryfile and Roadshow below 5m.

Wonder why ITV persist with these celeb lead travel docs - they never seem to rate that highly and I bet the demographics aren't great.

Loving Mrs Hatto didn't do to well - surprising for BBC1 as its the time of year when any old rubbish seems to rate well for them, with their home of Christmas tv reputation.
