Tangled didn't exactly take advantage though, did it? Shrek deserved to be down as the films have got worse. I am however pleased that it beat Tangled as I had a bet on.

I think, though, the figures prove that Shrek having its own special ident and taking that slot over the far superior Up is probably one of the most horrible decisions the BBC has made this Xmas. I'll be disappointed if Up doesn't do at least 1m more on NYD.

Given the earlier timeslot Doctor Who did well and it should timeshift well, in terms of share it was ahead of all but Eastenders.

Doctor Who shouldn't be too disappointed. It's 1m up on its previous best overnight for the latest series! Everyone said the early timeslot might hurt it, but it was actually one of the least scathed. Strictly, Midwife, Emmerdale and Downton were all DOWN on their usual audiences. Doctor Who was UP.

I see we are predicting ratings based on Zeebox and Twitter, and RPG averages. If you want something equally unscientific, but previously vaguely reliable and based on real people sat in their homes watching telly, I did cop a view of around 12 houses with tellies openly on display as I was being driven back between 7.30-8pm. Every single house, all 12, were watching Corrie rather than CTM.

Granted I am in Corrie heartland, but I thought that could be significant. I predicted a win for Corrie in the overnights yesterday, by around 8m to 7.2m and I am sticking by that - in fact, I feel I may have over-estimated CTM.

I have a gut feeling the Beeb may have screwed up here - I now wonder if CTM will overnight below 7m? Of course it will add possibly 3m in the next 7 days, but the reporting tomorrow will be interesting - I think it is going to get tonked by the soap old-timer.

I reckon millions of homes will be saving Downton and CTM for viewing during the rest of this week. I think both those shows pose a threat to the main offerings tomorrow night, it's around 3 hours of period drama and millions will want to see both.

Can make a case for any of EE, Corrie, SCD, DA and DW each topping the night, but I think EE probably will just scrape home but by a fine margin.

I don't think anything will overnight above 9m. Astonished that the CTM average prediction in the RPG is 9.1m!

Yes, credit must be given where due to Doctor Who. All the talk beforehand was about Downton and CTM. I don't think expectations were as high for Who and it's performed well. It can do better of course, but in the context of how other programmes performed yesterday and also how Who was doing in the overnights earlier this year, it's a pleasing performance.

Tangled didn't really take advantage, no, although at 3.3m inc+1 it was at least about where I expected it to be whereas Shrek was way off.

I'm not sure if Up would have done any better yesterday to be honest although I do agree the ident was a waste. Up has a nice slot on NYD where it should do better.

Up would have done worse imo, all the pixar premieres have underwhelmed in recent years.

So, what do we think we are going to be looking at in the officials. I'm guessing (inc+1 where relevant)

Doctor Who - 10m
Strictly - 8.7m
CTM - 10.5m
EastEnders - 10.7m
Royles - 9.5m

Emmerdale - 6m
Love of Dogs - 4.8m
Emmerdale - 7.1m
Corrie - 10.3m
Downton - 11m

But we'll see...

In effect, I was right about CTM being sub 7m against Corrie because it was. Only folk switching to 1 after Corrie brought it above 7m.

Massive scheduling howler by BBC1, as ITV crushed it.

Downton will be top rated show again, but it could be close if EE consolidates well. But for all tomorrow's negative headlines, and the loss of ad revenue if say 4m watch without ads this week (potentially taking live viewings away from ITV this week), I can see them putting £s before kudos next year.

Here is my tuppence worth.....there were 12 of us last night at a house party and we only watched Black Adder Xmas...CS was being recorded in all 4 homes and EE in 3....DA was recorded in 2 .....but I forgot to record so will watch it elsewhere somehow!! Nobody wanted to watch Shrek or Tangled or Dr Who or SCD.....I recorded both films though.....

Excellent rating for EE....I caught the repeat on BBC3 later on....

It looks as though Tangled was only 3rd in the end as I've just seen that Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa before TOTP did pretty well for a repeat. Around 3.6m I think but I'm just looking at the raw numbers.

Really can't see ITV making as much effort next year. I predict no post-Queen premiere and no Downton as both are capable of rating better and making them more money in the run up to Christmas, so it's a no-brainer.

I suspect you're right. Downton would have done better on any other night this month, and Tangled could have mopped up a nice audience at teatime on a different night. I expect they'll think about that, and look at the OK-ish performance of Love of Dogs yesterday and opt for more filler next year. As for the 9pm slot, they'll have a few Poirot's ready to air by next year so they'll probably just toss one of those out. At most it'll be a festive Midsomer.

A shame but when you look at last night's numbers and think about what Downton, Tangled and even Love of Dogs could have got elsewhere (I bet Love of Dogs would have managed 5m tonight at 8pm in That Dog Can Dance's slot) then it is just too much of a waste of money for them.

Indeed. I reckon DW, EE and Corrie are the only shows that can hold their heads high this morning.

But - overnights are now almost totally dead and redundant. We are still very firmly in predictions mode because we won't know what folk watched this Christmas until this time next week (inside sources permitting).
