One programme I can see doing really well on BBC One is BBC Three's Bad Education. It's got a great cast and importantly, it's really funny! I can see series two doing really well.

I do wonder whether the likes of Miranda and Mrs Brown's Boys would have taken off more quickly if they'd launched in BBC1 primetime or if they'd have got unimpressive numbers and been axed. It is quite fascinating how no current mainstream sitcom launched in a mainstream primetime slot. The closest anything has come to that is Miranda which launched in primetime but on BBC2, and Benidorm which launched at 10pm on Thursdays on ITV1 before moving to the Friday 9pm slot in series 2.

I'll be interested to see how ITV's new sitcoms do next year. All are launching in the heart of primetime on a network which has barely aired any sitcoms for years. My hopes aren't high for Great Night Out on Fridays against Silent Witness, I can see it struggling with about 3m. It looks a bit generic. The Job Lot sounds like it has more ratings potential and of any of the new sitcoms I'd pick that one to do best. It has a solid cast, decent premise and I think it might do alright. I'm glad it's only 30 minutes not 60 minutes too. Vicious sounds like it could be brilliant but I'm not sure whether it'll have a big audience - it doesn't sound very 'ITV' at all although the cast is stellar and I think it could be very funny. I can see it having quite an upmarket audience with the cast involved and quite a loyal fanbase, but it could be one of those shows that gets talked about but doesn't get viewers.

I'm a fan of Bad Education and I was going to say I don't think it fits BBC1, but on reflection maybe it does.

Except - we haven't really had a mainstream sitcom hit set in a school since Please Sir. Remember Hardwicke House starring Roy Kinnear on ITV in the 1980s? So cointroversal it got taken off air after just 2 episodes.

And both Chalk by Steven Moffett and Boinjour La Classe starring Nigel Planer flopped.

The main reason, though, that Bad Education is unlikely to be moved to BBC1 is that David Walliams new BBC1 sitcom, Autumn Leaves, is set in a school.

I'm a fan of Bad Education but I really can't see it becoming a breakout hit on BBC1. It would rate higher obviously but I don't think it's worth the move.

EastEnders rose last night as Emmerdale began according to DS do we know by how much? Bigger gap then when Emmerdale beat it in Nov is it not?

I love Bad Education but as Iain said we haven't seen a classroom sitcom be a mainstream hit since Please Sir. However I do think Bad Education should be promoted to BBC2. It could do even better there.

Some complaints that not much happened last night. But it seems the calm before the new year storm which they're promoting like mad on BBC1.

EastEnders averaged 7.68m (31.0%) between 20.00-20.30 and then 7.86m (30.1%) between 20.30-21.00.


Yep, on 15 November Emmerdale beat EastEnders by 2m during their half an hour clash. Yesterday EE beat Emmerdale by 3m.

Going back to BARB and smart TV catch-up.

Took delivery of an new LG smart TV today and it only has BBC iPlayer, no ITV Player, 4OD or Demand5.

So if I didn't have access to catch-up through another STB, only my BBC viewing would be included by BARB as the other services would be through a laptop.

So the BBC must be picking up a lot of BARB reported viewing in LG smart TV homes compared to the others.

Do other brands of smart TVs have the commercial platforms?

The first part was Aftermath from Xmas day but the second half wasn't really. It was 2 eps put together and not written as a Hour special

I'm surprised to hear the other platforms aren't on there. I thought that they were on that LG model along with the Freeview channels. Still a fair bit of iPlayer viewing is through the PC and BARB still aren't measuring this yet.

I've got Youview so I've got BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4od and Demand 5. But I rarely use the commercial ones because of the adverts which you can't skip, so instead we would record things and skip the ads.

You can only watch in HD with BBC iPlayer too, so the others are basically only used as a last resort in this house at least.

I think here's a point where peaks could be used as it didn't peak at the end. Was there a moment worth tuning in for at 20:25?

Bad Education should stick to BBC Three, they could use the ratings

It did well in the first series, hitting a million a few times which not many BBC Three shows manage to do in their first series.

I suspect at 8.25 as programmes on other channels finished people turned over to see what was on BBC1, realised it was Eastenders and quickly found something better to watch!

On Sky we get Demand 5 in HD, ITV Player is ad free and the BBC iPlayer is the same HD quality as the original broadcast.

That's why I like ITV Player on Sky as all shows are commercial free plus with Demand 5 some shows are in HD. All shows are downloadable. Bliss.
Yes. It's a much better viewing experience watching the players through Sky.
