Iv always had a fascination for the era. Ripper Street had to get the atmosphere right to describe the near hell that parts of London were at the time and I thought it did that pretty well last night. I think its problem will be that too many ladies of the house wont want to be involved with murderous mayhem when they have got the Selfridge thing on the other side. Did well to hang onto 6 million plus last night but can see a few desertions.

Countryfile tops the night on overnights - suspect both WAH and RS will come out comfortably ahead of it officially.

Commiserations to you both-I dont know anyone who has had it, curiously.

Extraordinary how the BBC News puts on 2 million viewers on what was frankly a very quiet news day.

WAH aside another very poor day for ITV.

A good if unspectacular start for Ripper Street. We'll see how well it holds up next week against Mr Selfridge but I can't say I was overly impressed with it. Not terrible by any means but it hasn't left a lasting impression and I can't say that I'm clamouring to see more. Maybe its a grower...

A decent performance from Wild at Heart all things considered. Obviously past its best but given the terrible performance of ITV as of late and the rubbish that surrounded it in the schedule it did well. Makes you wonder what it might have been capable of with a little more support.

Also a little disappointed The Last Leg didn't do a little better although it was on a little later than I'd have liked.

These things are ridiculous - we all know Christmas Day is like a game of bingo ratings wise with only rough ideas as to how things will end up. That's what makes it fun. Does Downton only coming 6th or 7th mean the last series wasn't a total success again, or that Eastenders topping the day means it actually has no problems whatsoever and shouldn't be at all concerned by the lead Corrie has had on it and the fact Emmerdale had been nipping at its heels?

But, all that said being said, a bit of bad press for ITV might be the kick up the arse they need. Even when it is from a hateful rag.

I'm sure they'll sort it out.

All five editions of The Chase last week were in the top 30, that we haven't seen for a daytime gameshow on ITV1 for a while.

You always have an interesting way of spinning things but I'd say that is pretty decent retention - far better than some other new dramas we've seen lately, and they didn't lose any viewers in the second half. Indeed most of the viewers lost went in the first 20 minutes, and I suspect that was mainly people thinking the show wasn't for them than thinking it was actually rubbish.

And remember shows sometimes need to find there audience.

Ripper Street is a new drama, so it was always going to loose some, and there was reason for people to tune out as well. Saying that I felt that over all the episode was strong and set the tone of the series well, im just not sure everyone will have liked that tone.

It won the night, and beat the final ever Wild at Heart, so its good that viewers are looking forward to new drama, not back to old ones, as we approach 2013.

Also pleased to see Moon picked up a respectable rating, for what isnt a blockbuster hollywood type movie.

Seems about right. You can automatically write off June, July, August because there won't be anything worthwhile there. So that takes us to September and Sunday is taken by Downton Abbey (doing 8m+). No Doc Martin at all. Thursdays were The Bletchley Circle and Homefront neither of which passed 5m. Mrs Biggs on Wednesdays hovered around 4m. And nothing opposite New Tricks on Monday did well. There would be a couple of other short run or one off dramas but I can't recall anything being too big.

In what undoubtedly has been a poor year ratings-wise for ITV Adam Crozier is to receive a bonus of £4 million in ITV shares which he can encash immediately. One wonders what he would have got had it genuinely been a good year for ITV ? Perhaps Mr Crozier will be moving on soon......

Wow almost 2 million for Bedknobs and Broomsticks. Disney don't make classic films like that anymore.
