I am not really surprised by the state of his fingernails.

The guy was beaten quite badly, he barely managed to get back to the car lot, it is not unreasonable to assume that his fingernails would have been roughed up

I would imagine it was dry blood and dirt from getting himself up off the ground when he was beat up, seriously, picky thread.
