Ahead of Thursday's final, I was lucky enough to catch up with James McCullagh - you know, Irish James who was runner-up in last year's Young Apprentice.

James and a few of the other candidates from last year regularly read my weekly blog recaps during the series, and he kindly said yes to my (slightly cheeky) request to conduct an interview with him. He shared with me some of his experiences of what it was like to reach the final, and also what he's been up to since then. Always interesting to hear things straight from the horse's mouth, instead of us all gabbing on about it on the forum.

Link below. Feel free to leave a comment or a question on in the comments section. Hopefully James will be able to spare the time to answer a few of them, although I can't promise anything.

(I will, naturally, be recapping the final on Thursday night.)

Surprised he didn't go to uni since that's what he said he wanted the money for, if I remember correctly. Good for him for getting his job of choice though.

James admits that he didn't really know what he wanted to do with the money. I guess the opportunity to cash in on his fame and take up a job in advertising off the back of Young Apprentice was too good to pass up. Arguably that's a short-term view and he might have been better served going to uni, but then opportunities such as the one he took up - he doesn't brag about it, but he's now an account exec with advertising giants Saatchi & Saatchi - don't come along every day.

It's hard to blame him for taking the risk, especially when there's plenty of role models of people who didn't go to uni or dropped out to point to: Branson, Jobs, Zuckerberg, and obviously Sugar himself.

I don't know James personally, but the impression I have always had from my communications with him is that he is as outspoken as he was on the show but genuinely a nice guy with a great sense of humour. I poked fun at him a bit on the blog in the early weeks of last year's series, but as he mentions in the interview he took things with a willingness to laugh at himself and didn't get dragged down by anything.

I approached a couple of last year's candidates to do a "where are you now" type interview, but James was the one who jumped on it with enthusiasm and turned around his end of the interview within 24 hours. I wish him all the best.
