Has an 'Extra' ever become a fulltime member of the cast?

Don't know his name but there's that Black guy in Enders who's been an extra for many years.
Once in a blue moon he might get to say a word but that's about it.

I was wondering if there's ever been one who got a lucky break, given a bit more to do and impressed enough to make it to the fulltime cast list?

Just curious, that's all.

Tracey, Winston-EastEnders
Emily Bishop-Corrie. She started off as a extra then in January 1961 she became a full time member!

Charlotte Lau in Hollyoaks was intially just a minor role.

Heather in EE, was only supposed to be in for one episode. You could also say Poppy is in the same boat, she was only meant to be short term but is now a full regular.

Bill Tarmey appeared as an extra in the background in the Rovers for years before being cast as Vera's never-seen-but-often-mentioned husband Jack. The character of Jack was meant to be a keen drinker so the writers said it made sense he could have been spotted in the Rovers prior to his actual casting as Jack. Thus making them both the same character although this originally hadnt been planned.

EE- Shirley Benson. Just an extra who worked at the bookies and was suddenly given her own storylines regarding missing cats, noisy neighbours etc out of the blue.

Jack Duckworth (Coronation Street) started off as an extra

edit: oops someone else has already mentioned him

Charlie Condou (Marcus) in Coronation Street didn't have a speaking role for ages before becoming a leading actor. He was virtually an extra.

Jack popped straight into my head too. He was a proper extra as well - just there in the background, no lines, no name, just there.

Like garyessex said, a lot of the 'big names' who first appeared in the 70s started off as extras. There are some episodes from 1971/72 where you can see Liz Dawn in the background as an extra, just a couple of years she became Vera Duckworth.

Hari Dhillon (Michael Spence) in Holby City played a Dr. extra before he was given the part of Michael.

Also, may be wrong but I think I remember reading that 'Aden Jeffries' in Home and Away started out as an extra in Summer Bay High, then he became regular.

His name is Ulric Browne and he's the show's longest serving male extra. Looks like his name in EE is winston.

I can remember an episode where they cut his dreadlocks for charity, probably the most popularity he had in 1 EE episode.

I'd say pretty much Jude from Emmerdale, he started off as an extra and saw him now and then, now he's in pretty much in every episode to be fair.

Tracey became a regular for one episode where Sam tied her up then was reduced back to extra after being set free.

Whilst not exactly an extra, Ashley from Emmerdale was a minor character for a number of years: he only appeared for weddings and funerals.

I think Pat (Pam St Clement) was only supposed to be around for a few episodes and ended up doing 26 years on the show.
But Tracey and Winston should be made regulars, 27 and 26 years on the show respectively and we hardly know anything abou them.

There is a big difference between recurring cast and extras. Most of the named ones were recurring / guest cast. Extras are those people lurking in the background to create a sense of reality. Someone working on the market, someone in a shop, a group of people often in the pub etc.

Greame Proctor, Becky from Corrie and Charlotte from HO were not extras, they always had storylines.

Another one from 'Prisoner' was timid prisoner 'Mouse'. Jentah Sobbott had been an extra with no dialogue for many months. Then she became Mouse and was in it a couple of years, playing roles in some major storylines.

Also in 'Prisoner' was prison thug Phyllis Hunt (Reylene Pearce). Pearce was an extra, then played Phyllis as recurring bit part prisoner, then became a regular.
