Stereo Sound via mains cable ?
Hi All,
I'm sitting here in work and one of my workmates has a question . He's just bought a new house and needs some help about his 5.1 surround sound system . He's got his TV and and the 3 front speakers positioned and set up ready for action . The problem he has is with the 2 rear speakers . It's a Spanish house (all concrete , no floorboards etc.) and he can't run a cable to the back wall without knocking holes in the walls . He was asking me if there's anything on the market that will let him use a mains socket to carry stereo sound from one socket to another through the mains cable . I know some baby alarms do this but I haven't seen any other products . Another option I suppose is via radio . I've seen those little transmitter/receiver units for sending video and stereo sound and I presume they would do the job . Obviously a sound only model would be ideal and a bit cheaper . Any help would be appreciated . Paul |

I can't imagine it would sound too good carrying high-fidelity audio signals over the mains... but technically, like you say, it works for baby monitors so it is possible.
There are some wireless systems which work on IR or radio, I believe, although I've not had any experience of them I believe they do exist. Have a search on google, I'm sure it'll come up with something. Mark |

I have no idea off the top of my head where to buy them here or in Spain! |

A video sender may be an option, most transmit a stereo sound along with the picture. I tried a Thomson one, (now discontinued I think) and it transmitted high quality stereo (not 5.1 though!) up to 30 feet from room to room. You could use one perhaps and not connect a video signal to it, audio only transmissions worked when I tried.

Thanks for all the help folks . He's found some wireless (via RF)stereo speakers that look as if they'll do the job perfectly .
