Rowetta better than Donna Summers!!
Earlier today I watched Donna Summers sing Macarthur
Park (thats the one about the cake in the rain which apparantly means something rude!). She performed it well but I have just re-watched Rowettas live performance of the same song on the X-factor and I have to say that its a far superior !!.... And Barney Rubble commented that the song was too big for her!....dont make me laugh!! I just wanted to remind people who don`t visit the Go Ro thread what an amazing talent she is! |

I do remember that comment by Barney Rubble
and remember thinking what a load of tosh. I agree with you about Ro's talent and really look forward to buying her music - hopefully in the near future.

Sharon also naively commented that she didn`t like it because it was about food!....maybe due to her recently annonced battle with bullemia?

Fair enough if she didn't like the song. Laughed when Ro said it was about something else
Maybe if she stuck to giving feedback about the performance she wouldn't have looked so naive. Mind you, I didn't know what it was about either but I since found out.

No, I heard it's about some mind altering drug e.g. LSD. I also heard it's about sex but I'm inclined to think it's the former. Could be wrong.

I found this rather innocent explanation:
The Mystery of the Melting Cake...., November 19, 2004 Reviewer: BrideOfCyrano (St. Augustine, FL USA) - See all my reviews This CD "Richard Harris, The Webb Sessions" is a lovely album, but I don't listen to it as often as I should. Another reviewer mentioned there are a couple of songs missing, yes that is annoying but I guess not all of the songs would fit on the CD and they had to leave something out.....anyway, I wanted to share with everyone the meaning of the imagery behind the lyric about "someone left a cake out in the rain". There is a Disney movie called "So Dear To My Heart" which was kind of a period-piece of the early 1900's and was about a little boy and his pet, a black lamb who always gets into trouble. In the opening musical montage for this film, animated scenes are shown of old-timey things from that era, and a picnic scene is shown, with no people around, because it has started to rain. The cake that is set out with the picnic food has begun to melt in the rain, and it is kind of sad when you think about it, how long it took somebody to make that cake and now there it goes, all ruined, and that must have been what Jimmy Webb was thinking of in his subconscious mind at least, when he wrote that famous line in his masterpiece song, MacArthur's Park. So thanks for letting me share that bit of trivia with all of you, rent the movie if you must see it to believe it yourselves. |

I'm not going to start the What's it about session again, but in an article with the songs author he quotes the song as being about a kid from Okie (Oklahoma)lost in a sixties L.A. Park tripping...and letting his emotions spark the hallucinations.
That always sounded the most plausable expl. to me anyway. Now back to main thread topic,YES indeedy I DO think Ro's version is superior to DS's(just personal opinion really) As for Mammon and Barney...what a pair of plums they were,TOO BIG? yeah right Barney, this is the gal who sang on stage at Rock in Rio in front of 100,000 fans!!! Too BIG,don't make me guff you pair of plums(apologies in advance for personal comments )NOTHING!!! IMO is TOO BIG in the way of songs for Rowetta, she knows herself better than those two do,she'd KNOW if it was too big a song for her,and subsequently wouldn't have attempted it,if she did. I LOVE MP always have the RH version especially,it's from MY era that said I also LOVE DS's version too, just NOT as much as I LOVE Rowetta's.Oh yes while we're on the subject. GO RO!!!!

Well done that man for getting this thread back on track! I agree...I could never imagine any song being too big for Ro. I like Donna Summers but when she performed it on TV she just stood there like a lump of lard and belted it out...technically good but no passion!
When Ro did it she did it with passion and made it her own! |

When Barney said to Ro that this song is too big for you, I knew he knew it was damn good. It was his attempt to knock her a bit with a snidey dig. Did he say what about the song that was too big for her? Did she not hit the notes or did she not give it enough emotion? Nah he didn't say anything like that cos it wasn't true. Ma Osbourne tried to pull a similar stunt and I think Ro knew it.
Back on topic, I haven't heard the DS version but I'll take your word that Ro was better because, I heard DS sing recently on AI2 and she didn't sound as good as she used to plus, I have recent evidence of how good Ro is.

I agree. Rowettas version was amazing. Donnas was fine, but Ro's was awesome!. Still feel its such a shame Rowetta did'nt make the final, I know Its all about personal taste, but to my tastes, she was much better than some who got further.

Well I like Donna Summer's version and Richard Harris's 'talkie' but I too have to say that for me Rowetta's version was stunning. I'm sorry but Sharon's comments about it being about food were just stupid. As somebody who has been in the business for years you can't tell me she really thought it was about food...I tend to agree with PIV's interpretation, given the time it was written etc. Still, Ro performed a stonking version and IMO Sharon was just looking for something to have a downer on.
Go Ro! |

And she only wanted a downer on it because Rowetta was one of Simon's acts. If she had been one of Louis' acts and had sung it as a four part harmony with her three sisters, Sharon would have suddenly loved songs about food.

That anyone can find Rowetta's version better than Donna Summer's is beyond me.
Donna had some great music .... I'm not saying Rowetta does not have a powerful voice, but it lacks the purity of Donna's ... which is many times better. |

Donna has some great music...I`m not saying Donna does not have a pure voice, but it lacks the power and emotion of Rowetta`s....which is many times better. Oh well we all have our own preferences! TBH i think it depends on the type of song...Although I think Rowettas version of Macarthur park is much better than Donnas I cant imagine Rowetta singing Love to love you baby. For that particular song I dont think anyone could beat Donna Summers. Last edited by wellard : 22-12-2004 at 22:20. |

I agree that Donna Summer's version was fab as I think I made clear earlier, but I thought Ro's version was stunning and I don't think she deserved the ridiculous criticism that she got... |

I believe that the "Ro is better than DS" debate is being misinterpreted....
I think ONLY IMO that Ro's version of MP was superior to Donna's...there is more LIFE in it than Donna's,that said,I too agree, that "LTLYB" can ONLY be sung by DS,some others have tried but all have failed....IMO IT's HER (DS)signature song. I hope that "Tomorrow" might concede the similaraties between Ro and DS are plentiful, esp they are both mega GLAM,both have big GAY followings too, both are survivors. It still rankles me that Mammon Osbourne and her soapy sidekick pasted Ro's MP for IMO feeble reasons..."I don't like songs about food!!!" er yeah right love, and Pigmy Troll 's "Too BIG" comment, another IMO barb intended to try and destabilise one of Simon's acts....no REAL critiques from either of them. FWIW I'm on record as saying that I'm GLAD that Ro was excused the "Poison chalice" of XF winner.....we'll leave Grinch to his and Simon's own devices...and let HISTORY judge who has the longest career. Go Ro PIV |

For the record I would just like to say that I have always been a big fan of Donna Summers!....I think she is superb!
I`m also loving the fact that people are picking up on the Barney Rubble nickname for Louis!

I`m also loving the fact that people are picking up on the Barney Rubble nickname for Louis! ![]() )I have said since Ro performed this song that it wasn't about who was best (version wise) but how she sung it. As a Ro fan from Day 1 I must admit that I am biased but also I loved the DS version (a lot of people I spoke to had never even heard the song, which amazed me - I'm not that old!) and I was worried that people wouldn't vote on a song they didn't know. Anyway, not sure what I was really going to say (too much voddy ) but don't apologise for this thread and your opinions It's Rowetta Time!

From my post, it's a natural conclusion.
