Say you wanted to cook tinned sweetcorn and kidney beans. Is it OK to cook them both in one saucepan or do you have to use two saucepans?

Yes, why wouldn't it be? If they are both tinned then they just need warming through as they are already cooked.

n.b. (dried kidney beans can't be warmed through of course because they are poisonous unless cooked on a rolling boil for at least 20 minutes)

Depends if they need cooking for the same amount of time, but you could always add one later on. Though if you did red cabbage and cauliflower you might end up with pink cauliflower

Of course it is! I cook pasta and veg in the same pan, adding the vegetables halfway through the pasta's cooking time.

Not strictly what you asked, but a couple days ago I did this

Boil a saucepan of water
Add some chopped onion, carrot, any herbs etc that you like
Simmer for 10 mins
Add new potatoes
Simmer for 15mins
Add a salmon fillet
Simmer for 4 minutes
Put a plate of top of the saucepan to warm it
Simmer for one more minute
Fish everything out with a slotted spoon and scoff!

If I'm cooking cauliflower or carrots, I'll often throw in some frozen peas or beans towards the end of the cooking time.

On that subject: why aren't there any frozen runner beans in the shops?

I do all my veg in one pan to save washing up..........

As I'm on an 'eat more veg' campaign this might be 4 or 5 things...........like today I've got carrot, potato, parsnip, cauli, green beans and I'll stick a bit of each in

One thing i do wonder is if i could use the same water day after day for say 5 days.............would it be OK to then use it as stock for soup ?

Seems a pity to keep throwing away the water that has veggy goodness in it

I'm wondering how the OP would cook a bag of frozen mixed veg ? It would be madness for producers to make them if it were not OK to cook different veg together.

I would think broccoli would take longer to cook than carrots.
