Ian, Dot, Sharon and though it pains me to say it Phil (I can't stand the character and so wish there was someone to knock him off his perch). Possibly Patrick, Bianca and Carol to some extent and not forgetting Tracey and Winston now they are legends!

Kat and Alfie are not legends and won't be they are just memorable characters, none of the newer characters will be legends either. The show won't miss the Brannings or Cora and Jay is neither here nor there, he could go tomorrow and there wouldn't be that much of a massive hole.

I'd say Jean, actually. But yeah, agree with the above post of Zainab. Such a shame she's off.

THe only legends in the show atm are: Sharon, Phil, Ian and Dot.

There are NO other legendary characters and none of the current crop are ever likely to be.

The idea that Tanya, Max, Zanaib, Bianca, etc., can possible rank besides the likes of Angie Watts or Kathy Beale is pretty ludicrous really.

It's all down to personal viewpoints. Nothing "ludicrous" at all.

If you stopped a non eastenders viewer in the street and asked if they knew who Zainab Masood was they would look at you blankly. If you stopped a non eastenders viewer in the street and asked if they knew who Pauline Fowler was they would tell you.

They had a question about Eastenders on Pointless recently, asking 100 people to name as many characters as they could remember. Stacey was the highest scorer with Peggy second, I don't remember the rest.

Not at all. Language is NOT subjective. The word "legendary" and the term "legendary" are not qualitive - they are definitive. Therefore, one can judge characters up against the meaning of the term "legendary".

Ergo - nothing to do with personal opinion but which characters fit the definition of "legendary". Simply look the term up in the OED then consider whether the meaning describes the character in question.

Currently few do, and fewer are likely to.

Janine.

From the relative 'newbies' i'd say that Lola and Lauren stand a chance if they stay for a long enough time.

Ian
Dot
Phil
Sharon
Janine

That's it, some of the ones you've listed are a bit strange.

eg·en·dar·y (ljn-dr)

a. Celebrated in legend.
b. Extremely well known; famous or renowned.
So, like someone said, if you asked a random person, they would more than likely be able to recognize the soap character. Others would be Den, Angie, Pauline, Grant, Peggy and possibly Stacey.

Zainab definitely would have been a legend if she had stayed. One of the best characters Eastenders have ever introduced.

I would also say Lauren if she stays long enough.

Janine if she stays as well.

I wasn't talking about the definition of legendary, as I suspect you know yet you just want something to debate.

It's absolutely personal opinion as to who may and may not become legendary. Who are you to say "that character is FACT, that character isn't FACT"?

It's actually fairly worrying that you seem to be utterly incapable of accepting that others have their own views and opinions.

If I or anyone else believe a character has the potential to be legendary, that will be a perfectly valid opinion and nobody (no, not even the mighty YOU) has the right to say that is factually incorrect. By all means you have the right to disagree, but that's all.

Unless you have a crystal ball and know what the future holds for these characters, of course. Which I doubt.

I'd say Sharon, Ian, Dot, Phil, Bianca and Carol

If they stay for another few years: Max, Tanya, Roxy, Cora, Lucy, Lauren, Abi and Lola

Though I'd say most of the ones I've listed are more memorable like Stacey, Bradley, Sean, Ronnie, Steve, Lisa and Mel.

Absolutely. Bianca and Kat will probably become legends by default but I don't consider them as legendary or iconic as the ones you've mentioned. The rest of the cast will never reach legendary status because the audience and exposure isn't there for EastEnders in the way it was in the 1980's and 1990's.

You need to read my post again..... I said "likely". I never said definitively that they would not. Shall we get the dictionary out.

As for characters that have no "future" I can definitively state that the likes of Zanaib or Tanya or Shirley are not in the same league as true legendary characters like Angie Watts, and therefore are not themselves legendary.

Go for it. And while you're at it, look up "opinion".

You said that nobody in the current cast will ever be deemed legendary. That may be so, but it's still merely an opinion and not at all a fact, because the future is just that. Nobody knows what it holds.

Do I believe Shirley will be a legend? Not at all. But that's merely my opinion and not a fact, and I have no intention of attempting to pretend I know what the future holds and that my viewpoint is the correct one.

These threads anger me because I'll see names like Derek Stacey Slater, not many are deserved of a legend status, it's a combination of many years of service to their soap like 25+ and old age.

Ian Beale Phil Mitchell and Dot, Sharon are the only ones currently who can make a legend status in years to come.

The rest are just a joke they have been in the soap 5 minutes.

Actually legendary means they are

a. Celebrated in legend.
b. Extremely well known; famous or renowned.

So, it doesn't concern how many years they have been on the show. Derek is not a legend, but Stacy is, possibly. A lot of people know her, she has been in huge SL's such as the Bi-polar stuff, and the Archie murder.
