Needing some advice on playing back DVD's
At present my set-up is as follows Sony Bravia 42" TV and Panasonic DVD Recorder with built in Freeview and numerous pre-recorded DVD's.
I am thinking of purchasing a Humax HDR-FOX T2 500GB Freeview + HD Digital TV Recorder, but this appears to have no facility to play back DVD's. What is my best option to play back my DVD's if I were to purchase the above? do I hang on to my Panasonic DVD recorder, which would then be a bit overkill just to play back my DVD's on, or purchase a blu-ray player such as the Sony BDPS490 Smart 3D. The reason for the purchase of the above Humax is to upgrade my viewing to HD which I don't have at present, only a HD ready TV, or does anyone know a better solution to give me both HD viewing and playable DVD's. Many thanks in advance |

You say that retaining the Panasonic for playing back DVDs is overkill - but then consider purchasing a Blu Ray player instead? Isn't that also overkill? I would say that yes you need something for watching optical media on - if you actually own any DVDs (either ones you've recorded yourself or commercial ones). And if you own any Blu Ray discs, or intend to own any Blu Ray discs in the future, then yes you need to have a Blu Ray player.
But I don't understand why you need to get rid of the Panasonic. As well as allowing you to play DVDs (though not Blu Rays) it also allows you to record DVDs. That is the reason for its existence. And the ability to record DVDs is not going to be offered to you by either a Freeview PVR or a Blu Ray player. When you want to archive something to DVD so that you can store it long term, or watch it on your computer, or watch it on a DVD player which isn't stored underneath your Sony Bravia TV, or to give to somebody so they can watch it at home or on the move, how do you intend to do that if you get rid of your DVD recorder? |

Very easy to create DVD's from recorded content on a HDR FOX T2 if you have a PC.

Maybe it is - but its a damn sight easier if you already have a DVD recorder. Which the OP does. No mention anywhere of them owning a PC.
No need to even use DVD media, copy the files to a usb hard drive and get hours and hours of content. Viewable anywhere as on a tablet PC. I can watch HD content in HD using my tablet PC and a pocket 500GB usb drive anywhere (eg on a plane), no optical drive or bulky discs required Time to join the 21st Century. Wonder what the OP used to create his post

![]() Wii? X-Box? PS3? iPad? Netbook? Internet cafe or library connection? PDA? Any other kind of tablet, games console or non-traditional hardware which provides wireless internet connection but certainly doesn't come with keyboard, mouse, monitor, and most importantly of all for burning DVDs, a DVD writer. Even if he used a PC (do people still have such things), how do you know (1) it is a PC he has at home, and (2) it has a DVD writer built into it? |

I would recommend a blu-ray player, they are quite cheap now, usually upscale well and will future proof you. They will also protect the DVD recorder which will have a limited life and can be put aside in case you do want to record a DSVD (the DVD recorder is more expensive than a blu-ray player).

I have a usb DVD writer cost less than £20.00 for a tiny netbook and yes it's capable of writing DVD's. A DVD writer for a PC mac or whatever costs about £15.00 these days, probably less than a fiver to a PC maker. . A blu-ray writer costs about £50.00. http://www.ebuyer.com/283932-samsung...Fe7MtAodpy4Agg You don't need a powerfull PC for DVD, and these days they all have DVD writers. I had PC's years ago that had same. I give up, poor advice, clearly no experience whatsoever of creating DVD's other than using a now very expensive stand alone device. I have a DVD stand alone burner, not used it for years. It's an anachronism. |

I too struggled with this problem.
I bought a blu ray player 2 weeks ago , and got the Panny 220 3 D model. This was really to match the Panny TV & not for an argument on what make is best etc So my Tv remote works the Blu Ray and vice versa I have been blown away with the Picture Quality on Avator 3 D and Lord of the Rings Extended Version on Blu Ray. I have been so impressed that I have bought my boy a Sony Blu Ray player from Argos ( budget ) for xmas for his Sony Tv I have also bought classic films like High Noon 60th & Ice Cold in Alex from Amazon and waiting patiently for them to be delivered. I cannot wait for Shane to be released next year on its 60th Birthday ! I say go for it |

another thing to consider is a new TV !!
With Freeview HD tuner and an ability to record to a USB hard drive and 3 or 4 HDMI ports , this may cut down on your clutter ? Only thing is that doesn't give you a Dual Tuner , so you cant record one & watch another option plus a lot more expensive |

You'll need a 3D TV if you want to watch 3D though.
