Vodafone India to sack employees for what they do outside work
Everything Goes
20-12-2012
Ever done something bad when you haven't been at work? Then its a good thing you don't work for Vodafone India as you would quite possibly get sacked for things like breaking the speed limit even when your not at work

Quote:
“The "Seven Absolute Safety Rule"s all appear to be centred around driving and carrying out electrical repairs. They include things like wearing a seat belt; not driving under the influence; not driving whilst using a mobile; not exceeding speed limits; using safety harnesses if working up a tall building.”

Quote:
“"A watchman once observed a senior staffer driving away without a seat belt and reported her," said an employee who requested not to be identified.

This code will apply not only to employees during office work/hours, but also to their personal lives.”

Stalin would be proud of this level of spying if he had been alive today. Big Brother is watching you

There are two points here:

India is a different society, much more concerned about honour and appearances. Things that might seem trivial in our culture have a much higher importance ( and vice versa)

Secondly, its not unknown in this country for employment contracts to specify that employees must act properly at all times even outside work.

" much more concerned about honour and appearances."

Methinks the above is to help keep those in all the tin huts with no sanitation and a lifepsan below 50 in order.

BTW if those have company cars they may well be deemed company drivers. Thus it could be quite similar to employed UK drivers.

My behaviour outside of work is a reputational risk to my firm and so I have to behave outside of work. But what they are requesting here seems very reasonable: aka not breaking the law e.g. no drink-driving, wearing a seatbelt, no holding a phone while you drive.

“ not exceeding speed limits”

That would be 85% of the working UK population sacked!
