it creates a fingerprint of the audio file and then attempts to match it agains content in the itunes store. it does not use meta tags to do matching.

It will scan any music you have on storage media at home and allow you to play them from the cloud.

Any songs that are already in iTunes will be made available and any that are not will be uploaded.

It means your whole music library is available to you all the time and does not take up space on your device.

You do need Internet access (not sure if it stores some locally)

Never used it but have a couple of friends who speak highly of it.

in theory yes, but in practice it's often the case that it fails to match content that exists in the itunes store (and often it only partially matches full albums).

i have many albums that it only managed to partially match.

No you don't need internet access if you store all of the music locally on device or on your computer, which is an option.

Some people like to stream music and use up less space on their device. I prefer to have it installed on the device and not have to rely on an internet connect to play stuff.

I'm thinking of getting iTunes Match. I've read reviews which tend to be mainly negative, but could a real user tell me whether they would recommend it or not.

I assume it doesn't matter if it fails to match as it will just upload them?

Can you choose to store part of your library?

yes, but the "matching" process is pretty poor at times.
plus you only have limited upload space (albeit it's a fair amount).

Yes. You can upload all of your library to the Cloud, then just pull down the tracks you want to store locally.

I have bought albums in the past, but where I only like 3 or 4 tracks, I just keep those on the device and the rest are in the Cloud.

Couldn't be without it. Excellent for 16GB devices.

It's the way forward.

if your in the house buy a NAS , store your music in there.

Get a free app called mediaconnect and stream music around your house from the NAS or pc

Out & about and iTunes Match will stream music to your phone.

iTunes simply uploads a list of your music , if you ever lose your iTunes folder on your PC , you can re-download your music legally........... and sometimes on a higher quality

Yeah, a cable is more convenient than wireless.

It's a bit useless when in this country, most data plans are capped. You'd easily eat through 1GB of data in no time using this.

Google Music does basically the same thing for free and it works just as well. It's a bit gimmicky, but I guess it has its uses.

I tried iTunes Match, and found it useless. It only matched a small amount of my music, matched some of it wrongly. I turned it off and had to restore my library from a backup.

itunes match is good if you have any 'Pirate' CD,s bought from dodgy boot fairs etc as it will take your crude recordings and match it with the latest digital recordings. It also stores your CD collection in the cloud so you can access your collection anywhere there is a good wifi connection. I have been using it for a year now but I am not gonna re subscribe as Google will store your stuff for free on there music manager.

I love it. It was able to match all bit around 50 tracks of my 6000 song collection. I was then able to delete the original MP3s I had, and download Apple AAC versions instead. So basically my whole music collection is now from the iTunes Store.

Plus I don't need to store music on my iPad or iPhone, I just play it from iCloud. I think it's a good deal.

Personally I didn't renew my iTunes match subscription. Now my music collection has been thoroughly laundered and bad quality tracks have been replaced by clean high bitrate versions. I just uploaded everything to Google music. Saw little point in keeping the iTunes match sub.
