Vestel Tv's
Hi, im not very knowledgeable when it comes to TV's. Can someone tell me who vestel are. Why a lot of budget manufacturers use them/Rebrand them as their own.
Are they any good as I seem to have heard a lot of negative things about them. And how do you know if you're buying a vestel tv. Cheers |

Vestel are a Turkish manufacturer. When you say budget manufacturers rebadge them what is actually happening is that some organisation that owns a name such as Bush get Vestel to stick a Bush badge on the front for them.
Most of these low end brands like Bush either ceased to be manufacturers in their own right years ago or are just made up, eg Technika as used by Tesco. There are a number of manufacturers like Vestel who make stuff for other people so you don't necessarily know who makes what. They are generally considered at the bottom end of the market. Doesn't necessarily make them rubbish but don't expect the quality levels of the likes of Sony or Panasonic. |

Both Sharp and Toshiba sell lot's of badged Vestel sets, both of whom are normally thought of as 'decent' brand names. But as chrisjr has already said, they are a HUGE Turkish manufacturer (another is Beko) - and apparently get large EU subsidies to help make them viable. But it's cheap, it's poor quality, and it's unreliable - what you expect for the price really. |

Thanks guys. Would you expect a vestel panel in a budgest Samsung TV, or do the likes of samsung/sony/lg/Panasonic only use their own panels.

Prices of mid-range TVs like LG and Samsung have fallen so much now that they are starting to squeeze out the budget brands like Bush. £200 now buys a 32-inch LG, from Argos, for example. Vestel has its own brands so these will definitely be made by it. They include Techwood, Digihome, Finlux and Luxor. |

My Panasonic uses an LG passive 3D panel so they aren't always what they appear to be. ( I knew that before I bought it) Maybe Nigel will be along soon to tell all.

What is certainly happening though is that LG, Samsung, and the cheaper manufacturers are all pushing the big names out of the market. One by one they are letting go, and either resorting to rebadging themselves, or pulling out of the market altogether. The clever ones pulled out years ago. Panel performance is better than it used to be across the board (to the point where the Taiwanese panels are really not that bad), and people are turning more and more to HD sources where scaler performance is no longer an issue. Even the cheapest of sets perform well enough for most people in HD, and SD is more and more seen in the same way vinyl was in the early 90s -- despite the fact that it's a perfectly capable format when performing at its best, most consumers only ever see the poor-performing examples and SD is dismissed by many. Sony and Panasonic aren't long for this world at the mainstream end. The Koreans are eating them alive. Sadly the better of the two (Panasonic) are also the weaker, so they will disappear first. |

I've seen various makes of panels in Vestel sets, and not really paid any great attention to them ![]() Panels are no different to CRT's, manufacturers source them where they can - the ONLY exception to that was Sony CRT's, as they used a completely different CRT to everyone else (the Trinitron) so couldn't source elsewhere. |

In their favour, because of the huge numbers sold, Vestel sets are common.
The service information id mostly available free on the net, and in the event of failure second hand circuit boards are generally available pretty cheap, so repairs are usually viable and cheap. |

Thanks for the information everyone.
I myself am looking to get a TV on the cheap (basically not over £350) and around 37-42" so just need to know who to avoid. During my research Vestel kept popping up with lots of negative connotations around their sets so thanks to everyone for explaining who they are and who use them. Anyone else find it weird how Sharp who (IMO) are well known for manufacturing LCD screens etc... get most of their TV's from Vestel. And Toshiba as well, don't they have a joint partnership with other companies to manufacture tv screens. I guess it's cheaper maybe? But good to know the bigger brands still use a higher quality screen like their own. I was thinking of Samsung tbh as i've had a TV of theirs before and it hasn't broken yet about 4 years later (touch wood) |

As I said above Vestel use various screens, many of them exactly the same as those used by 'better' manufacturers - I'm sure I've seen Samsung panels in Vestel sets?, and LG/Philips, AUO, ChiMei etc.
I'll try and stick to the main brands when looking though, so Samsung/LG etc... Thanks again. |

Vestel do manufacture LCD panels and they are labeled as "Manufactured In Turkey" but you wont see them in Sanyo, Sharp, Hitachi etc. They're reserved for the real dross, Acoustic Solutions, Goodmans, Xenius etc.
The construction looks like AUO, I suspect they bought old plant from China and you can spot them a mile off by picture quality, all the bad attributes LCD panels had years ago. |

Because of the set-up costs, there are actually not that many manufacturers of TV panels across the world all told.

Not convinced about that. More like LG and Samsung are cannibalising their own sales by dumping previous-model product on the market.

Panasonic have already announced they are pulling out of LCD manufacturing. They are also scaling down the Plasma side. The business will be making screens for Apple iPads etc as it's more profitable than making TV's....
Assume you mean they are pulling out of making TV panels?

So if I get either an unbranded TV set for example or a TV set with a brand name I have never heard before, does that mean that there is a 90% chance it was made by Vestel?
