It's 4.1.2, under discusssion in this (misleadingly titled) thread
http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1768257

Main advance seems to be the ability to split screen and run two apps side by side

The 4.1.2 udate will bring some new apps and multi-window support which is the ability to have two compatible apps open on the screen at the same time. Which is sweet. Hopefully Google will incorperate this into Android.

Sense (which is horrible) is HTC's modified version of Android. TouchWiz (which is horrible also) is Samsung's version of Android. But Sammy are giving some nice functionality.

Personally thought that Sense was way ahead of anything before jellybean came out but they didn't develop it much and a lot of the ingration features which were a major point of Sense are now in jellybean. But it is/was a major resource hog.

You know how with your PC there's a difference between admin rights and normal user rights, so some things a normal user cannot do? It's the same with the phones, there are certain protected settings files etc that you're not allowed to change unless you have those superuser / admin rights.

Rooting is granting those rights

ROOT basically means that you have administrator level access to your phone. Normally when you are using your phone, Android operating system restricts some of the stuff you can do, mainly to protect yourself.

As for getting rid of sense from your existing install, well you are actually completely replacing the phone's operating system (ROM) for a version without sense. And as you found out you need Root level access to do this.

There are various options for ROM, they are based on Android and then have their own tweaks added, there is a good review of options here,

There are a couple of different base ROMS out there, Cyanogen
