It could be expected that Tate would win. But I was rooting for Carly. I think that all the three acts have contracts awaiting.

All they'd have to do to prevent this though would be to not put the Tate clones through to the final 16/12.

Personally, I'm not too thrilled with the result, but both Carly and Fifth Harmony probably have careers waiting for them now anyway so I'm no overly fussed about it anymore. Plus Tate seems like a deserving winner as a person.

I wasn't particularly invested in any of the contestants this year but Tate seems like a nice guy, so congrats to him i guess.

Does anyone know if he gets the $5m cash prize that Melanie (apparently) got?

Anyway, roll on American Idol Season 12!! - there are so many promos floating around for this and it looks great

Its not a cash prize its a record contract. It will have a million small details. It was the same for Melanie. He is certainly alot richer today than yesterday but who knows what actual money he will receive from it.

Fair play to him though. Thought he was boring but he was very consistent with his performances. Simon hates country too so that makes this amusing at least.

^^^This.....it has never been a cash prize, it's a recording contract worth 5 million with a 5 year commitment , it is equal to 1 mill a year for 5 years. I believe they get advanced something 250,000 on winning but the rest is tied up in the contract.

Tate is one of my least favourite contestants. Every week it sounded like he sang the same song. But he has his fans so congratulations to him.

Poor Simon, not a good winner, but predictable after the awful revealing of weekly votes

Yeah, can you IMAGINE how that would have gone down in the UK? On the other hand, maybe if the public had realised what they were doing, and that Maloney was top of the ratings, they might have come to their senses a bit sooner.

Isn't it a 5 year contract, in which they assert they will spend $5 million to produce and promote his CDs and give him advances every year for his living expenses. But doesn't he have to pay everything back out of royalties if he gets them?

Well he gets the chance to show his work and have big time marketing. Good luck to him.

I wanted Fifth Harmony to win and would have preferred Carly to Tate but oh well. He seems like a nice person and good luck to him. Hopefully those who voted for him will actually buy his music.

Probably not. I think that they love that genre because it's very...American so it makes them feel proud! Zzz.

If by any chance anyone reading this is a fan of The Simpsons, Tate and his gimmicky cowboy image reminds me of the episode where Lisa creates her own doll but people instead rush over to the new Malibu Stacy doll because "it's got a hat!".

Several articles quote a show spokeswoman saying it's actually $5 cash:

"Although “The X Factor’s” grand prize was described repeatedly as a $5 million recording contract, it is actually $5 million cash, a spokeswoman for the show said. Last year’s winner, Melanie Amaro, reportedly is being paid a million bucks a year over five years. She got a record deal, too."
