Do you think he was actually afraid of what Brendan might do to him though, Sarah? You can see that he's scared, but I took as more scared of what Brendan is doing to himself rather than what he might do to Ste?

But maybe that's just me

I think when Brendan throws him against the wall, he's instinctively scared for himself, yes, you can see it on his face, and it would be weird if he wasn't. But it's just for a second, and he gets a handle on the situation straight away and he doesn't think about himself at all, as you say, all he's thinking about is Brendan.

Yeah, that's pretty much how I see it, like basic instinct kicks in for anyone before the reality of the situation does. It wouldn't matter who was pushing Ste up against that wall, you'd still get that kind of reaction.

I guess I'm just trying to put across that Ste isn't afraid of Brendan in that scene as a whole, but more scared for him.

Am I making sense?

Yes, perfect sense. Anyone would be scared in that moment, but Ste's only actual thoughts (as opposed to the reflex reaction to the shove) are about saving Brendan from the fear and despair that have gripped him.

Exactly. I think Ste knows by this stage what Brendan can be like when he gets into that head space. The thing is Ste knows Brendan is still a 'work in progress' to be honest. He's there for Brendan because he loves him and wants to be there for him. He believes and knowsBrendan is capable of change, because he's seen how far he's come, and he wants to help him through it. I think Ste knows that Brendan will struggle at times, but the sole reason Ste is there by his side is because he wants to be. I think Ste would rather jump off a cliff than let Brendan revert back to his old ways.

I think it's like Kieron said in his answer, Ste wants to be the person that saves Brendan, like Amy was for Ste. Ste knows Brendan has changed and he seen the full scope of this change in Dublin, but it's moments like the one in the kitchen where Ste knows Brendan is still tortured and definitely not totally 'OK' (for obvious reasons) so I do think he would be afraid when Brendan lashes out like that. But like others said I think it's less for himself and more because he's frightened of what Pa's presence is doing to Brendan.

I think when you really love someone your main concern will always be for the other person, especially they are in such a state as Brendan was in that moment.

The bit I didn't get though was when Brendan said to Ste 'you left me' I mean he didn't want his dad to see himself and Ste together so I don't understand why he was upset that Ste left.

I thought this was an interesting thing to say as well actually. I would have thought Brendan would have wanted Ste to leave so as not to 'give it away' so to speak.

What I took from it was that Brendan did want Ste there for support. Ste saw that Seamus was essentially running Brendan into the ground and instead of maybe thinking of a way to get Brendan out of it, or making something up, he just kind of bolted. I think Brendan wanted Ste to either stay for support purposes, just so Brendan has someone there with him to stay strong for and get him through, or else he wanted Ste to find a way to get him out of it maybe? Either way he just didn't want to be alone with his Dad, so when Ste left it was almost like abandonment. Betrayal. After everything Brendan told Ste about his Dad, he just left him there to deal with it. That's just my insight anyway.

Interesting question though.

I think it probably helped that by this time Ste had heard a bit about the way Brendan's father had treated him in his youth, and then had just witnessed for himself what kind of man he was and the effect he had on Brendan. Previously he knew Brendan was volatile and could be violent; now he has some insight into why he is so.

Heyy guys long time lurker here I figured I might as well join up already. I don't live in the UK so I somehow stubbled on Hollyoaks through YouTube and ended up watching a couple of the ste and Brendan parts and became interested in it and well couple months later here I am addicted to their story line. I watched all the scenes they had together from the start, but I kinda just skimmed through the last months were it was Stug (don't like Doug) and I have been super exciting with Stendan FINALLY being back together! And I'm excited to see them going forward as a couple and seeing what's gonna happen to Brendan when/if he leaves. Also I'm glad I found a place that appreciates Brendan and has awesome members you guys are great!!

I can't remember who's fic it was. Maybe Ayla's actually? Think it was taking the power back maybe?

But seen as Brendan obviously looked uncomfortable Ste should have made out that Brendan was still his landlord and there was a problem with the flat.. just to get him away.

But then we wouldn't have got that amazing hug scene so...

Hi Welcome!

Can I just say how jealous I am that you found and finished the storyline just in time for the reunion? What I would have given to have been able to do that and not had a year and a half of anticipation!

Having said that, the wait is over! Thank God! Only couple!Stendan from now on!

And Ste's parting words were 'I've had enough.' We know Brendan doesn't believe that he deserves Ste, and in the fragile, frightened state he was in, he was probably paranoid and thinking Ste had left him because he'd gone back into the closet. His tone was accusatory when he said 'You left me', but it was a form of defence, and I thought the subtext was, I knew you'd leave me, everyone does.

Poor Brendan. I'm not what you'd call a 'shipper', and I have grave reservations about much of what has happened this year, but Brendan has had such a god-awful miserable life that even I want him to know some happiness and peace of mind before he - you know.

Sarah

I think I said this when it aired but I also read that scene as another conflict in Brendan. He desperately needed Ste there but at the same time didn't want him near his dad. I guess in the end his need for him to be there overrode that, hence all the upset.

I loved in that scene how Brendan checked if the kids were there first before he broke down. I like to think he'd have reigned himself in, if they were. But he was so far gone and lost it's hard to say
