I thought you could only dislocate joints...

You can tell I'm no medic, can't you.

And does it stop you dancing?

Yes, it seems you can dislocate a rib, sounds painful too

I would imagine that no doctor would recommend dancing with a dislocated rib .It can compromise breathing

I've never heard of it before

I suffered a subluxation, in which the connection of the cartilage between the breast bone and a rib is more of a sprain. It's not as severe as a dislocation where connection between the rib and breast bone is lost.

Mine happened on one of the occasions when I fell off a horse, and it was very painful to even breath or cough - I didn't feel like laughing. An actual dislocation is serious.

A joint doesn't have to be moveable - anywhere that two bones meet is a joint, be it between the ribs and the sternum (breast bone) or the plates that make up the skull.

Thanks for the info.

Trouble is what she has (having seen her on ITT) is presumably a sprain as she was throwing herself around in training and waving her arms about on the sofa.

Silly me for being so gullible as to suppose the press would get it right!

If she did what I did she may have trouble sleeping as lying down is incredibly painful and makes it really difficult to breathe. I was OK when upright though so slept with 5 pillows or stuck on my right side.

Hubby had a dislocated sternum once & was in so much pain had to have direct cortisone injections into the joint & painkillers! No way could he move dance & even breathing was painful!

As a lifter, I have moved ribs when the barbell comes down back to the shoulders in an awkward fashion. Takes a good osteo to manipulate them back in to place, but it is uncomfortable in the meanwhile.

Had a friend who dislocated a rib about a decade ago. It was easily fixed but took a long time to heal. The pain was so bad she couldn't lift anything and bending over was agonising. I don't see how you could take part in a dance competition with this kind of injury.

What are you saying she is making up the injury or she is very very brave.

it is slightly far fetched to think she is dancing after a correction of a dislocated rib actually .It is a very painful prodceedure and leaves pain and bruising in its wake ,

I take it then she will not be dancing tonight or she is lying about injury what is is it in your opinion as it has to be one of them.

I have to say (yes, I really do) that I thought it odd that Denise said she was 'sore' and James said she would get through the final on 'adrenaline' - and then she twice jiggled about waving her arms without a care in the world.

I don't think she was playing the sympathy card but it was odd IMO.

She certainly didn't give the impression of being uncomfortable.
I've hurt my ribs & you are so careful not to move suddenly & twinge them.

I "merely" bruised my ribs and it was agony. I could not think Denise was sitting there let alone dancing if she had such an injury, unless she is high on painkillers such as morphine?

Would they actually treat someone like that just so they could perform babe

Exaggerating an injury possibly , Yes . I know what its like to have a dislocation corrected .It yanks muscles, ligaments and causes a lot of local pain and stiffness .So Yes , perhaps an exaggeration , I wasnt there in the A+E so cant say .It was possibly a subluxation , which is an incomplete dislocation and easier to manage
But if it was a corrected dislocation and she dances following it I am of the opinion that she will be very very sore and inhibited in movement .

What is the treatment for a rib dislocation?

An athlete may get anesthesia so that the doctor can manipulate the rib back in place. There is time pressure. It is hoped that treatment occurs within six hours to prevent complications.

After the rib has been re-established in its correct position it will be wrapped with an elastic bandage for compression.

The patient may also be given Acetaminophen for pain as well as, in severe cases, narcotics.

Once again we also run into the popular formulary of R.I.C.E. This stands for rest, ice, compression and elevation. This is primarily the athlete should perform on their own.

How long does it take for a rib dislocation to heal?

That is a hard question to answer because there are so many different levels person-to-person. Generally it takes about six weeks. Keep in mind that is just healing, that doesn't get the athlete ready to return to their sport.

Strengthening and conditioning are what is needed not only for recovery but for prevention.

There are potential complications that should be watched for. They are primarily shock and infection at the outset and as the patient goes along they must be watched for impaired blood flow.

The good news about a rib dislocation is that rarely is surgery required.

A rib dislocation is serious. A dislocated rib can also affect other parts of the body and there may always be more than one.

The best preparation is to understand what a rib dislocation is and get a victim immediate help.

Sounds very painful, I wonder why she is being allowed to continue? There could be further complications surely. How can she do energetic moves without doing further damage. Could she sue if she does?

Have to say that when my friend dislocated her rib her skin turned black with bruising and she couldn't move for days. It was agonising even sitting up or lifting an arm. I bruised my ribs as a teenager and the stiffness and soreness from that was enough to leave me out of action. I know 'the show must go on' but I really can't see how someone could dance a few days after dislocating a rib.
