Have they gave him a personality transplant?

No. He's haunted by one of the most traumatic pasts imaginable, and whilst he could stand up to his father physically, he'll never be able to break that barrier psychologically because his dad has beaten him down so much and still has a huge hold over him.
It's disconcerting to watch a character who's strong and powerful like Brendan be reduced to this 'scared little boy' - I think during the scene with Seamus/Ste in the pub, Ste's discomfort at having to watch that was basically representing the entire audience - very uncomfortable viewing, but brilliant. And it explains so much about who he is; tying up all the loose-ends of his character before he leaves the show. As for his relationship with Ste.... no character-transplant there either. He's still a grouch, but through months of character-development he is making an attempt to change and be the partner Ste's always wanted him to be. As in - no violence. Point is, his character has always been multi-layered and had so many different parts to him. Those who think his characters 'changed' because he's not strutting around with chain-saws anymore may have missed a lot of episodes, or failed to previously connect with the more loving/vulnerable parts to his character which have always always been there. Now he's making an effort, but I doubt he's lost his cold, powerful, cruel side either. |

That is solely down to his fan base and any change in his character is purposeful for the Stendan SL. You may not like it, it may be coming tedious, but it is necessary to bring closure to Brendan before he leaves. It makes sense if you understand the history, and I am not just talking about the recent revelation about the abuse inflicted upon him.. |

Ste and Brendan have the best chemistry of any couple in soap right now. It's refreshing to have a gay couple who are actually a good fit, rather than just being thrown together because both are gay.
