It was the song which made her an international star. Initially Better in time was going to be her debut single but when Bleeding Love arrived at the eleventh hour, they rightly decided to go with this track as her first single.

If Leona had not released Bleeding Love, where do you think she would be today? Would Spirit have sold far less copies?

Leona probably won't be remembered for anything else.

Leona would not have been as huge of a star without Bleeding Love, but for me I always remember Leona for her rendition of Snow Patrols Run

hard to imagine "better in time" as her launch single, it was a good 2nd single combined with footprints but Leona would be nothing without bleeding love, if her material past the first album is anything to go by

This. She'd have sold about 1.5m of Spirit here and about 3m WW.

I wonder how many artists we could say the same about?? Where would many artists be without a successful first single?

And I actually always think of Run when I think of Leona or even Better in Time! Oh and Happy, and forgive me! Oh and footprints in the sand, and Collide! Oh and Trouble now! She has had many hits!! And judging by the sales of Spirit I think any song she had released first would
have had major success!

Most people won't have heard the whole of Spirit before they bought it and many were buying purely based on the strength of Bleeding Love (and to a lesser extent, A Moment Like This for the UK and Ireland) so this is not the case.

You can only really consider songs that were on the first edition of the first album so Run, Trouble, Collide and Happy can't be considered so you are left with Better in Time/Footprints in the Sand which failed to hit #1 in a single country so was clearly living off the success of Bleeding Love,

I disagree!! Leona had gained momentum and was the first Xfactor finalist to take time creating an album and i believe the anticipation of it all contributed to album sales! And i believe whatever the first single was would have done well!! The promotion for her was heavy! There is no way to prove who is right unless you interviewed every person that bought the album and asked them why! But if you believe that her career since Spirit in 2007 has only lasted this long off the back of one song, then it must be the most powerful single recorded!

Exactly. For many artists their first single is the one they're most remembered for. It's people's introduction to the artist, it's their first hit and is what draws attention to them, of course it's normal for that to be what people remember most.

It depends on the song. Whitney wasn't known for You Give Good Love. Crazy In Love however...Look at Rih with Pon De Replay. It really depends.

Unless she has another potential hit in her, she would have been "just" Europe-famous (like Alexandra). Also, the show will probably not develop and not turn into the bundle of crazy that DS hates.

I think that depends on how big the hit record was.For Leona her first hit was by far the biggest. Those artists who have had bigger hit singles/or as big hits subsequently are likely to be remembered for those. Rihanna is a good example - Umbrella

She can probably retire now and live off royalties from future covers of the song.

Jokes aside. I do feel sorry for her. Bleeding Love provided the perfect platform for her to launch her career globally. She wasn't able to take that advantage and sustain the momentum. Happy was an absolute disaster as her sophomore single.

Well put! So far, your post is the most probable and insightful appraisal of Leona's music career since winning the X Factor.

The thing is she has bleeding love so there is no point in saying what if! The fact is she did get bleeding love, and its a fantastic song to be remembered for.

A couple of things spring to mind from the OP's question.

First, BL was slated as a song my quite a few people when it first came out but it was generally thought at the time it was popular because it was Leona who sang it, now, a lot of people are calling it the other way round.

Second, I think she may have been better without BL, because when something big like this blows up it is very hard to follow this, so if BIT had been the first single, then perhaps more realistic expectations would have been placed on subsequent albums.

For me personally, BL was not my favourite from Leona, but I genuinely love her music and I have enjoyed her progression since Spirit.

For me BL is quite a bittersweet situation.

Depending on the contract, some artists do get royalties even if they didn't write the songs.
