Yes, I am totally left behind in the world of technology, and I can't see myself ever catching up! My poor daughter asked for an i-pod touch for Christmas, and she now has to wait until Thursday when her cousins come over to help her set it up, as I have no clue where to start, and she is only 11 and can't work it out either!

How I long for the days when Christmas just meant assembling a few toys and stuffing your face! So disappointing and disheartening to think because I'm such a techno-thicko that I'm holding my child back, but I am seriously baffled by all the jargon!

I sympathies even though i use Tech i think it should b easy to use& setup.

I have very little time for hard to use tech. And i dont think anyone should get wound up due to setting Tech up on the hols. I dont want to spend my time of working stuff out like that.

I Still have.not managed to get my.smart phone to work with.my home wifi. Other people cant make theirs work.with it either. Gave up and no longer worry about it.

The one that seems to be confusing Mrs PD is all the adverts for You View. Along the lines of "all the tv you want subscription free"

"So how does that work then?" (thinking it offers a load of sky channels but with no subsctiption)

Until I explain it's nothing more than a freeview+ PVR that can also record from iplayer etc over the internet.

Oh she says, is that all?

I wonder how many people with perfectly good freesat pvr's see these sort of adverts and think "that looks good" and buy one without fully understanding just exactly what they are buying?

Likewise people choosing between freesat and freeview. Do they make a choice based on which channels they want to get, or based on whichever advert they see that happens to make it "look good"

My brother wants a computer and he is 54 and never even looked at one. He knows nothing about anything and I can see that it will be my job to teach him.

It will take him weeks to turn the thing on and shut it down, I'm not joking and that's before we move on to what a window is and how to make it full-screen or minimise it to the task bar. "What's a task bar?"

Plus I expect that he will want to use my Broadband bandwidth and not pay a penny towards it.

That's the only negative thing I have to say about Youview, let's hope they introduce it in the future (in HD).

It seems to me that many people regard their pieces of tech as a fashion accessory or status symbol rather than something practical.

Two classic situations are the £300+ smart phone users who only make calls or send texts, and the £2000 TV owners who have fudged up the display settings so badly that they might as well be watching a £200 bargain basement model.

"how do i do this in Windows 8?"
- I dont have Windows 8 so I cant help with that.

"And you know when you do this in Windows 8, why does that happen?"
- I dont have Windows 8 so I cant help with that.

"What i dont understand with Windows 8 is how this happens"
- I still dont have Windows 8 so still cant help you.

------------------------

"To use freeview do i need a £300 digital aerial?"

"in order to keep my tv working i have to keep paying my Sky subscription even though i cant afford it"

"I dont know how to record digital tv, can it be done?"

"I only have half the freeview channels but my friends 20 miles away get all of them"

Do you have a backup of your pc?
"Yes I have 2 hard discs called partitions, C and D".
Thats the same drive, so you need to buy a 2nd drive.
"Can i use blank DVDs?"
You can but the discs can fail and its not as easy to do as with a 2nd hard drive, and DVDs dont hold as much.

-----------------------------------------------

"I need to change the oil in my Citroen, what type should i put in or do i just stick in the cheapest?"
Look it up in the handbook as there are different types of oil and some cars require specific types".
"I will just buy the cheapest from the shop and stick that in, should be fine".

"theres some sort of alarm going off inside my Citroen when i take the key out, do you know whats wrong?, and btw it happened a few hours ago so i just left it, is that going to be ok?"
Most likely you have left your lights on, and your battery may now be dead.
"Why would it sound an alarm if i leave the lights on, never had that stupid feature on my previous cars"
Its an alarm to stop idiots leaving their lights on

he should check with his local schools and collages. Most offer free computer courses for beginners.

I had to learn computing at that age because my job changed and it was learn, at your own expense, or be made redundant. I bought a computer from John Lewis and a few books including Windows 98 in easy steps. It was very hard at first, few people had the time or patience to sit with me but redundancy is a great motivator. If your brother really wants to learn he will slowly teach himself at his own pace, your faster pace will just be demoralizing but he will find it hard at first.

That won't be happening. He knows nothing because he chooses to stay in and shut himself off from the world. He has no life skills or any other. He wouldn't be able to sign up for a course leave alone be able to perform the social niceties required to go on one.

I'm the first to admit that I'm not a very good teacher. I know the stuff but that doesn't make a good teacher.

I get impatient if something I said 5 seconds ago isn't remembered. If I say "maximise the window" and have already taught that bit in full, I get annoyed if it's met with "How do I do that then?"
