Christmas dinner disaster.
It's usually me that does the Xmas dinner but the kids had so many toys that need built and set up I let the Mrs do it and well it was a disaster.
The turkey was cooked 3 hrs last night and 2 this morning, it was still half raw. It was all watery, it was white inside but all watery, the Mrs ate it anyway I tried a bit but didn't chance it. The roast spuds were hard as the road as where the sprouts and to top it off the cocktail sausage thingys had a tangy taste to them, obviously went sour. What happened? How did it all go Pete Tong? The packaging on the turkey said 4.5 hrs for cooking. |

When it say 4 1/2 hours it means continual cooking time, turning it off gave it chance to cool down and then it had to get back to temperature. Personally it seems a dangerous way to cook meat at any time. Half cooked it's got time to build up nasties and then to cook it again well just sounds risky to me.

You cannot partially cook meat, it has to be fully cooked in one go.

I hope Santa brought your wife a good cookery book for Xmas!!
![]() Have you checked your oven is working properly? Sounds to me like it's not getting hot enough. You definitely shouldn't cook turkey a bit one day and a bit the next day. Haven't you seen all the adverts about food poisoning? I would dispose of the rest of the turkey fairly quickly. Definitely don't eat any more. |

Yes stuffing, carrots and mash all fine. I can only put it down to being a crap Turkey to be honest, I mean I usually cook the Turkey and I cook it the night before myself for over 60% of the time required and then just let it sit in the oven and turn it off, the heats still kept in the oven, it then had another blast today. So I mean by the time we got up this morning that thing would almost of been ready to eat. As for hard roasties I blame Aunt Bessie, sour pigs in jackets the butcher, and hard sprouts the Mrs

I can only put it down to being a crap Turkey to be honest, I mean I usually cook the Turkey and I cook it the night before myself for over 60% of the time required and then just let it sit in the oven and turn it off, the heats still kept in the oven, it then had another blast today. Some years ago my son knew a few lads who got seasonal work at a turkey factory and they used to have a competition to see who could put the most greenies (their choice of word and we're not talking sprouts) inside a turkey before it went to be frozen. ![]()

In my 63 years on this planet, I've never heard of cooking a turkey for a few hours then letting it go cold and cooking it the next day. That is absolutely asking for trouble. First there is the risk of bacteria multiplying and secondly, the meat is ruined by being cooked twice.
I bought my turkey half price just after last Christmas (2011), and kept it in the freezer. I cooked it today and it was lovely. It was in a hot oven for 3 hrs 15 mins and was perfectly cooked. |

Partially cooking it and then leaving it overnight would be great for breeding bacteria so hope you enjoy it tomorrow

Don't blame poor Aunt Bessie for your spuds either OP. Ours were hers and were fine. If they were too hard then you cooked them too long or didn't eat them straight away.

Why the hell would you cook it for a bit one day and a bit the next day? 4.5 hours isn't a long cooking time, why couldn't you have just cooked it when you got up?

I can't believe anyone would even think of doing this. If you had popped it in the oven at 8 in the morning it would have cooked in plenty of time.

I can't believe that the OP thinks that the cooking time can be divided up. When something has to be cooked for 3 hours, it means 3 hours all in one go. Not 2 hours then 1 hour later on. Unbelievable.

Why do people make such a fuss about cooking turkey. It's a bigger chicken and needs longer. It's not an alien life form.
