Orange 3G

Has anybody got any experience of the new Orange 3G service? Some of their new phones look good. Any deals for existing customers to change to 3G?

Haven't had a chance to set it up yet, but my Orange 3G phone arrived yesterday morning .

To be honest I probably won't use the video calls side of things that much but the package they're offering was cheaper than my current provider and includes 50MB of free data transfer a month (which I will use) and an hour a month of free video calls. They're also running a £50 cashback offer if you buy it through the Orange website.

The good news is that I believe these deals are available for existing customers wanting to upgrade as well. (It's cheaper for them to run a voice call over 3G than 2G, hence the incentives.)

I have a Z1010 on Orange 3G and, apart from it's chunky styling, it performs well as a bluetooth data modem. My first handset had a problem with dropped calls and have received a replacement tonight.

Orange have a dedicated support line for 3G by dialling 350 on the handset and have made extensive use of this facility.

This is one of the reasons I'm upgrading to 3G. What sort of
data rates do you tend to get Guv'nor?

Roughly 55-60Kbps up and 280-370ish down depending on distance from the cell tower. Mind you I did get this freaky result once: Speedtest

My replacement Z1010 is flawless. No dropped calls and perfect 3G-2G handovers. Syncs up to my Powerbook running Mac OS X 10.3.7 without any problems as a bluetooth modem.

Orange had a "soft launch" on 10th December. They are not actively promoting 3G yet but early adopters who sign up before the end of January get a promotional bundle of data and video calls.

Not tried video calls yet, but the phone itself is very good - Z1010. Basic data rates are very good too.

IN terms of offers, I got the following offer online:
- 200 minutes a month evening for the rest of the contract life.
- 60 minutes free video calls a month
- £50 cash back.

The £50 cash back is only available buying online, but the offers are available until the end of January. That should give you enough time to run out your existing contract.

GPRS/3G connection seems to be more as it's needed rather than permanent (like my old O2 phone), but it's not had a problem attaching when needed.

the se was the other phone i was looking at. one downfall on the nokia is that you have to have an attachment for video calls

Depends on the Orange subscription rather than the phone - if you have what they call their 'Orange Internet' profile for GPRS rather than 'Orange WAP' for GPRS you should be OK.
