I admit it, the DVD thing passed us by. We went straight from a video (which we still use sometimes ! ) to PVRs and we very rarely ever bother with prerecorded DVDs. However, for Christmas I was bought the World at War DVD box set and the BBC Olympics DVD set. I put them in my Sharp DV NC55 DVD/Video but it wouldn`t play either of them, it just comes up "wrong disc type". As a check I put in some of the freebie DVDs I got with the Railway Magazine and it still plays them fine.
I don`t know a much about all this DVD regions thing but I`d have thought that the BBC Olympics DVDs should surely play on any DVD player ?
Does anyone know what gives ?

As an aside, if I buy a recordable DVD (the cheapest at our local Argos is an LG DRT389H for £130) can I use that to transfer my video collection onto DVD using the SCART external input ? If so are there any common problems with doing that ?

I suppose the first thing to ask is, are you sure you've got the DVD sets and didn't pick up Blu Ray sets instead?

It could be that your DVD player is failing, most common problem is the optical assembly, which normally starts to not play some discs, and then gets worse and worse.

If they are commercial video's they will almost certainly be copy protected to prevent you doing that.

Hello.
On both sets it clearly says DVD, though it doesn`t mention anything about which region.

Will they play back on your PC ?

Thanks for that Graham, I`ve just had the idea myself, great minds think alike ! Pity I didn`t think of that last night as me and the wife were becoming concerned she`d bought me a duff DVD set, and I can tell you the original World At War DVD set isn`t that cheap.......
I suspect the Sharp DVD Video* just won`t play the particular this particular region. It does surprise me that the BBC Olympic set in particular won`t play, you`d think they`d make suitable for any DVD player.

* A DV NC55, it is about 10 years old, I got it free from work when the customer never came back for it after we`d fixed it !

BBC DVD's are usually Region 0 (ie Region Free). If they play on your PC they will be either 0 or 2 (Europe PAL standard 720 x 576 25fps). Sounds like you need a new player. You can get a cheapo for as little as £20.00 and these are often multiregion out of the box. Many can also be hacked by the remote control to disable region codeing checks.

The region code will normally be superimposed over a map of the world. If no mark most likely no regional codeing.
