O2 don't do one, but when I was on O2 I got one of these, you can get them slightly cheaper if you shop around. It worked very well and went from 1"pip" if I was standing on my head with my phone at a certain angle to a full signal all over the house and garden.

One of the weird legal oddities of the UK - it's legal to buy a repeater, but it's illegal to use one to retransmit a licensed frequency (i.e. any mobile phone operators signals). At least unless they've given specific permission.

Repeaters actually reduce the performance of the base station that they're retranmitting so the operators tend to be very careful about how they're used.

Has there actually been a case of someone being prosecuted let alone imprisoned for using a mobile repeater?

There is currently an app call Tu Go on trial which is aimed more at the commercial market. it allows you to make and receive calls as well as send and receive texts over a wifi connection. The app is currently being trialled on iOS and Android, and will be trialled on other devices such as PCs soon. Hopefully this should launch in the near future. It removes the need to have additional boxes and lets you connect wherever there is wifi so it's a lot more flexible. Being able to make a call from an iPad if you've not got your phone with you is great!

How is this different to skype exactly? Does it actually use your mobile number (and not cost anything!)?

Yes it uses your mobile number. You simply connect to cellular or a wifi network to get coverage.

You use your normal mins/texts allowances as if you were on cellular.

Now before I get shouted at about using minutes on my own wifi etc, its worth pointing out that the boost box, ~Voda SureSignal etc ALL have the calls coming out of your allowances too - this is more flexible and doesn't require you to buy another bit of kit.

I cant believe that O2 has taken so long to get what was once called O2 Connect and now Tu Go out with their customer base.

For someone who lives in an area that lost O2 3G coverage around 12 months ago ( Tx went down, insufficient complaints in a given space if time, service not restored) I am now stuck with a borderline 2G signal and dropped calls thanks to handset trying to roam to a non existent 3G service.

Used it for 3years before moving to EE. There are more important things they are worrying about than a low power booster.

No prosecutions in these statistics.
