The New Music Thread
There has been lots of good new music released this year but, as usual, you have to discover much of it for yourself. This thread is for those new (or new-ish) artists you've enjoyed this year that aren't very well known yet but who you think are really good and recommend to other people.
Here are some of mine, and I've even found some song samples so you can have a listen ![]() The Arcade Fire Incredibly good new band. Their debut album 'Funeral' is definitely one of the best of the year. Catch them now before the hype starts in the UK next year e.g. - 'Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)' and more here. The Magic Numbers I really like what I've heard so far from this band. Such well crafted pop songs. The critics seem to love them as well so hopefully they'll do well next year e.g. - 'Hymn For Her' Willy Mason Amazing that he is only 19 with that voice and those lyrics. Just darn good songs e.g. 'Gotta Keep Moving' Regina Spektor She's quirky, but in a good way. A great sense of humour and some really good, catchy songs e.g. - 'Us' A Girl Called Eddy American singer/songwriter Erin Moran. Classy, sophisticated and gorgeous songs e.g. 'Heartache' The Dears I can't describe this Canadian band any better than the few reviews here at Amazon. The Morrissey/Damon Albarn comparison is spot on but they have their own sound and the songs really grow on you e.g. - 'Lost In The Plot' Anthony Hamilton This guy seems to get overlooked even though he's released one of the best soul albums of recent years e.g. - 'Comin' From Where I'm From' Micah P. Hinson Another young guy who sounds much older than he actually is. I really like the simplicity of the songs and the raw emotion in his voice e.g. 'The Possibilities' Ray LaMontagne His is my favourite album of the year and I'm sure more people will catch on soon. Amazing voice and timeless songs that I know I'll still be playing in 20 years time. Other, (more obvious ) new artists I've been into this year are: Bloc Party The Secret Machines The Futureheads Kaiser Chiefs Devendra Banhart So....anyone else have an opinion on these artists or have other new artists they recommend?

Kaiser Chiefs- I saw them live, supporting Franz Ferdinand the other day. They were actually really good. I've heard some of there songs, also, via the internet. I was very impressed. So...yeah. I recommend them.

Bloc Party are pretty good got a single called Banquet, sound like a darker Franz. Look forward to their album next year.
Sons And Daughters been listening to their album since summer but have managed to leave it in a rental car so will have to buy a new one. Features backing singer and drummer from Arab Strap trivia fans. Clinic, not really new but released new album Winchester Cathedral which I've played a lot Only thing i've heard of Devendra Banhart (I think it was him) was a cover of wanna be your dog which was surprisingly good. |

Thirteen Senses will break big this year in a slow burning Keane sort of way.
Their debut single 'Thru The Glass' is re-released in January and should be a massive hit. Canadian band Rilo Kiley should be massive this year. Agree about The Dears and Willy Mason - both fantastic |

blimey - willy mason! agree completely - we saw him support ben kweller (worth a look if you haven't already - another mature musical head on young shoulders), and he was fantastic, just him, his guitar and his stories. i think his cds did a roaring trade after the gig.
have just looked, and noticed that a full album came out in october - thought it was out in the new year, after "oxygen" is released as a single. will have to get it i think. also want to check out, but haven't yet : thirteen senses album "i'm wide awake, its morning" - bright eyes "good news for people who love bad news" - modest mouse the new mercury rev album and maybe nelly mckay Iain PS enjoyed those samples - especially the arcade fire (who for some reason reminded me of a band called das psycho rangers who released a phenomenonally great ep on ztt @1986, the singer of whom had the most amazing voice, but then sadly dissapeared, as was typical at the time, fell out with ztt IIRC) and regina spektor - i like a bit of laurie anderson type wierdness if you don't know it, i can't recommend her strange angels album highly enough. IMO, the Thirteen Senses and Nellie Mckay albums are good and definitely worth checking out .Here's a few more new artists I've been enjoying over the last few months. May be some people will like these, or may be not : Metric American indie/pop band with a slinky female singer. I like the way the songs are quite varied instead of all sounding the same and some of them are just perfect e.g. - 'Combat Baby' The Radio Dept. A Swedish indie band with really good tunes. The music can take a bit of getting used to as sometimes there's alot of fuzz/feedback but the tunes are still there e.g. - 'Ewan' The Concretes More indie/pop loveliness from Sweden. Gotta love that Swedish accent e.g - 'You Can't Hurry Love' Grand National I'm not into dance music but this is a bit different. A mixture of pop, funk and dance beats done brilliantly e.g. - 'Drink To Moving On' Sons And Daughters Scottish band who specialise in 'countrified blues' or so they tell me. Good songs which do sound quite similar to each other but still good e.g. - 'Fight'

Iain I've heard the first few songs from 'Strange Angels' so far and definitely want to hear more . I think if you like a bit of weirdness as you said earlier, you will like Nellie Mckay . She has a bash at lots of different styles of music (including rap!) but generally pulls it off. So, to answer your question I would say definitely more Tori Amos than Norah Jones . Also, if we're talking about unusualness, there's always Joanna Newsom to consider.....Along the same female singer/songwriter lines, a few other albums I've liked this year which there's a chance you may also like are Mirah - 'C'Mon Miracle' and Patty Griffin - 'Impossible Dream'. ps. did you know that you can watch a live perfomance of Regina Spektor here that she did for Xfm? Strange that she only does a few songs from her album but it does show just how damn likeable she is .

Yan Ng Ann Manang Life Is Beautiful the first (Yan) is a really interesting singer, though very quirky. she put on a red wig, spock ears and a spacesuit for her second EP cover. not that good a sight to be honest. ![]() Ann is cool, only 13 i think but has such a rich voice you wouldn't adam & eve it. Life Is Beautiful is a new girl group, pretty good with some interesting touches. you won't find any of these in HMV though. |

the problem is their names are probably not written in english on most websites so its hard to find them online, especially with thai artists. i don't know of any sites off hand but maybe you could try a google and see what pops up.

I think 2 new bands to look out for this year are:
The Black Velvets - single '3345' out on 28th feb and tour starting 1st feb. Big, ballsy rock group..had some rave reviews, very good live. The Wire Daisies - tour starting early this year. Lead singer has an amazing voice, very good live. Had some success on itunes - number 1 album!

I don't know if you've ever heard of Butterfly Boucher or KT Tunstall but they are also pretty good young female singer/songwriters who are worth a listen .
