Where to buy interesting/rare fruits?
I found lychees, rambutan and physalis in ASDA, which I've never had before. After a bit of research I've discovered an enormous amount of fruit I've never tried! Which places in the UK sell rare fruits?

My local tesco usually has some rare fruits, but to be honest they're never that nice when i try them
Presumably if they were really nice more of them would be grown and they wouldn't be rare ! I've tried phylsalis but can't remember it They have a big green citrus fruit that's like a grapefruit called a Pomelo..........again it's nothing special, I'd rather eat an orange.......... |

The Morrisons at Plymstock when it had a revamp had lots of exciting rare and weird fruits and veg. They even had unusual greens that were kept chilled with a mist of water being randomly sprayed over them.. haven't been therefor months so no idea if it failed or succeed, but was nice to see and buy things we do not get in this country.
have a look on this site see if any thing takes your fancy then try and track it down http://tropicalfruitandveg.com if you use the word exotic in your search you get more hits then unusual or rare |

If you can get to a large Chinese supermarket such as Wing Yip, you will find a variety of exotic fruits. I imagine its the same at an Indian or Afro/Caribbean store aswell.

There's one Polish one that I know of. ASDA has the best variety of exotic fruit from what i've seen. |

My local Asda had some Dragon Fruit, so I bought a couple. They reminded me a bit of Kiwi fruit with its' little black seeds (although Kiwi fruit is green, and Dragon Fruit is white !)

Ask you local green groceries what's available, I'm sure they would be happy to buy extra items at wholesalers as long as you prepared to buy a reasonable quantity. Ours picks up indian veggies for us.
Alternatively try ethnic supermarkets. |

My absolute favourite is the Persimmon - similar to Sharon fruit, but larger, more like a capsicum in size and shape. Sweet and tangy, no stone or pips to worry about and you can eat the whole thing unpeeled like an apple.
Rarely seen in provincial supermarkets, but a few weeks ago Lidl had them on offer at a knock-down price, 25p I think it was, then I found some in Tesco at "half-price" = 50p. I'm hoping they will start to appear more often now. |

Had rambutan straight off the tree in Thailand - they were delicious, but bought on the market stall, not so good. I think a lot of the 'exotic' fruit doesn't really travel well and most I've tried here in the UK have been pretty bland - probably picked early so they can be freighted without getting bruised I suppose.
![]() I would give a thumbs up to the Sharon fruit in ASDA though

Sharon fruits are pretty common now in London, I think they've ceased to be 'rare'
I like them, they're like sweet juicy carrots. I guess Kiwi has also joined the mainstream - they would have been rare fruits 10 years ago |

Yes, Sharon fruits have been widely available for ages, and not just in London. Can usually be found in the larger branches of the main supermarkets.
It's the persimmon that's not so easy to find. Same fruit really, but a good bit bigger. |

I love all tropical fruits, I find 'normal' fruits boring and I'm allergic to a lot of them. For me, mangoes, lychees, pineapple, longan, passion fruit, guava, etc. |

Bought a 'pepino' fruit while recently staying in our house in Turkey. It's like a Williams pear to look at but has a floury melon texture - lovely. Personally, I haven't seen them here.
Cut open the seeds resemble that of an aubergine - I believe it's melon/ aubergine/ cucumber/ tomato related along the way. |
