Tethering on Three
Hi all,
I'm considering getting a new mobile on Three. Ideally I'd like to be able to provide a wifi hotspot from the phone so that I can access the internet from my tablet. The mobiles on Three which offer "All-you-can-eat-data" all state: Does anyone know how Three enforce this? What stops Three customers setting up tethering without buying the add-on or One Plan? Thanks for any replies. dagi |

They can scan internet traffic and determine if you're tethering or not by looking at the data tags as mobile phones have a different type of data packet to laptops etc.

I've heard 3 are very hot at spotting tethering and putting a stop to it. Virgin allow tethering on all their pay monthly (30 day rolling contract) SIMs and they start at just £7/mth. They use EE. The ones with unlimited data start at £12/mth.

Three can spot and stop by detecting when you use desktop apps or browser. I would not sign up to a non tethering allowed contract if you plan on tethering |

Bear in mind virgin have a 10gb cap on their unlimited data.

I would not sign up to a non tethering allowed contract if you plan on tethering I believe once someone goes over 10gb in a month they restrict the speed during daylight hours until the end of the month. We've never got near 10Gb so it's no problem for us but i agree it should be made clear to potential customers. If you don't use more than 10gb in one month and EE is OK in your location I think Virgin are much better value than 3, personally. |

I've got a SIMO plan which doesn't have tethering, yet it seems to work for me. Mind you it's only very occasional and light usage when i tether (such as surfing and emailing when my internet falls over). Nothing's been said yet but YMMV.

I've never quite understood how any network could be in a position to on the one hand offer you unlimited data, and on the other hand say no tethering. Surely that is YOUR data and even if there is a cap if you dont exceed it, what is the problem? Some people tether a tablet when out and about probably not using loads and loads of data. but like to have the option to be able to use their data on a device other than on their phone. I dont see the problem.

You have to buy an addon if you want to tether other devices as these typically use a lot more data than you would on a handset. |

It's unlimited HANDSET data, it's not intended to be used to power your computers and home internet as well.

Did I say it should be used to power your home internet as a primary means of internet connection? Nope. I said this data if you are using it out and about in conjunction with your phone and you aren't going crazy with it, they shouldn't really be charging you for the privilege to use a little extra data with other devices such as tablets. Instead they should just have a maximum cap and leave it at that, tethering or not, that would be your upper limit.
