I used to listen to radio 1 as a kid because that was the station my parents listened to. Then they sacked all my parents favourite DJ's and they stopped listening, I then started listening to my local station ( it was the cool thing to phone up the request show in the evenings and dedicate songs to your mates).

I hadn't listened to R1 at all in the last ten years or so. Until I started work at my new job, they have it on in the back. My god its awful, It must play the same three or four songs every hour or so. I know local stations are repetitive but not to this extent! The DJ's are awful and so poncy and full of themselves, I find myself longing for my friendly if a little cheesy local DJ's.

Im not suprised it has hardly any listeners left, its completey out of touch. Im in their target audience and I wouldn't listen outside of work! It tries to hard to be cool and trendy. Its like MTV, likes to think its still relevent but sadly not.

You may find it gets much better after 7pm weekdays... if you're into Indie and non-pop...

I have to say the most irritating person is Jo Whilley. God she gets on my nerves, the way she speaks in that public school, home counties accent does my head in. The thing that irritates me most though is that its Chrsitmas in two days time. You'd never know this listening to R1. I want to hear Slade, Wizard, Wham the original Band Aid etc. They are so unfestive, the songs may not be modern but thats what people like to hear at christmas. They play Fairytale of New York and The Darkness one from last year once a day if your lucky but thats it.

I think people tire of hearing the same songs every Christmas, especially if they are played to death. Anyone that works in a shop that has piped muzak around the store at Christmas will know what I'm talking about!

Radio 2 fare a bit better - I usally listen to Steve Wright in the afternoons, although I'm not Radio 2's target audience by any means. They do play quite a few oldie Xmas hits but I think Steve Wright needs to learn to stop yakking so much over records and jingles. I don't give a toss what the weather is like in the Algarve, Steve.

As for Jo Whiley speaking in the 'home counties' accent - I don't think there's much she can do about it! What accent would you like her to speak in then?!

Are you sure you were listening to Radio 1? - I think it does play more than the "same 4 songs per hour" Granted it does play Green Day and McFly a bit too much, but it is waaaayyyy more varied than your local ILR.

"Days of Yore" is right about Radio 1 getting better after 7pm. As I work during the night, the specialist 1-4am shows (Apart from "The Rock Show") make the hours go quickly

You've also said that Radio 1 hardly has any listeners anymore. For Q3 2004 (June-Aug) R1 increased the ammount of listeners it has to over the 10 million mark.
(I'm sure if they counted Internet Listening properly, it would be way more)

And BTW - I'm also in the Target Audience, but only until March, as then I reach 25. Looks like it's over to MOR/AOR Radio hell for me then!!!

Radio 1 has some of the most blandest DJ's in radio has about 10-15 songs on its daytime playlist repeated over and over again everyday. Radio 1 never seems to play songs from the previous years, only usually music in the charts now. Its taking them till 2004 to axe the dance/rave DJ's of the mid-late 90's. Radio1 has a very bland, boring presentation to it and seems to have no life.

Although The Rock Show is excellent.

I like chris moyles, colin and edith, nemone ( I did't but now am starting to like them) Scott Mills, and I like the sunday surgery, but I can't stand all the other, crap, like westwood, i do like some of the weekend stuff, like Spooney and Vernon Kay, but I don't like jk and joel, and Wes is such an anoying prat, why did they put him on radio one! But I like radio 1 as it has a choice of music not like stations like Galaxy that plays dance 24/7 which is just so anoying!

Joe Whilley is the pinnacle of tedious radio....she can't pull off an interview, she is far too into her music and yet knocks off her play list without complaint....and she is simply boring.....I can;t listen to radio one when she is one...I;d sooner listen to Wogan..and that's saying a lot....

We have radio one on at work too (not my choice) and I do get frustrated by the repetition (The Killers 3 times in 6 hours - and 6Music hammered it to death first time around last year too!)

I bet if you look at this forum in 5, 10, 20 years time we will still be compalining about the same thing!

I find Chris Moyles quite annoying, he sounds really full of himself and like most Radio 1 jocks loves the sound of his own voice. He appeals to 15-30 year olds into FHM, Max Power, and most of his listeners own Clios/Saxos/Escorts or Fiestas with some crap stuck on them or a stereo worth 2,000.

I also find Jo Whiley and Nemone irritating, but Scott Mills is good most of the time.

When you hear Phil Jupitus, Mark Lamarr, Steve Wright, Johnnie Walker, Jonathon Ross, Andrew Collins on the beeb stations you appreciate how good they are compared to what R1 are coming up with.

You can then look at commercial stations. Pete and Geoff, Daryl Denham and Simon Hill & James have all won awards and have either a depth of musical knowledge or are real radio personalities, or both. There's loads more DJ's on top of that I could go on about, and XFM have some good talent as well. As much as I don't like her Lauren Laverne is worthy of her spot, and then there's The Storm on Sky/DAB who have some great talent. Even Nick Hennegan on Arrow can be interesting/entertaining.

As for the music and playlist Radio 1 can be a bit limited, I got sick of hearing Ignition on there, but then again most stations (except for the mutant version of Virgin Radio we have at the moment) have limited playlists.

I think that R1 DJ's do talk too much, and when I think Jeremy Vine talks alot, it's usually something interesting and worth while. Pete and Geoff on Virgin talk loads, but it's about news, or something that happened to them. Chris Moyles spent 2 or 3 minutes about how he can change the mic's in the studio to be on one side of stereo so that people with clock radio's wouldn't be able to hear what he's saying.

Well, that's my opinion

Thats what i love about National Radio 1, you don't get the cheesy crap thats on all the other stations.

Although the amount of speech on breakfast is far too much Chris Moyals and Scott Mills are good presenters, having the live sessions on Jo Wiley and far less repition than the other local stations is what makes radio 1 so much better than it was some 18 months ago

Some songs get played a touch too much, but the rest of it is massivly varied.

Only Radio 2 plays a larger variety of new music, with commercial radio we'd be left with the same cheese week in week out, and the repetition on Galaxy 105 is sooo bloody annoying, last time i gave it some ear time i heard sharon o love - faster car about 10 times in the same day -thats taking the flippin piss

That granted - they avoid alot of the rubbish my ILR's play.

I can't think of anyone who is a direct competition to Radio 1, as they are national and the music is very varied.

If you take Virgin you have Steve Harris with "The Edge" which I find to be excellent and Pete Mitchell with "Razor Cuts", another excellent alternative music show. I listened to Zane Lowe the other night and whist he was ok, I don't know I could listen to the whole show. Strange as I don't mind Gonzo on MTV2.

I think (and have said this many times) we need some personality radio - I can't fault R1 for that. They do give their jocks room to speak and bring to the show what they do. However, I think the personality has to be varied, especially being the BBC. Virgin cleared out most of it's personality jocks when they got rid of Captain America, Simon James & Hill, Daryl Denham, Jezza, and Dominic Mohan (who I think went on his own). Now they all sound roughly the same, playing roughly the same. They also cut back the hours of Razor Cuts for a chart show, and moved The Edge right back to the small hours. This has made it quite bland, and you know that what ever time you tune in you're going to get the same music.

I can't think of any station which has the same variety as Radio 1, but I think alot of their DJ's need to look at the real talent, or the bosses need to look at people like Kelly on Virgin who is really good at what she does, and if she was allowed to bring her own music and style to a show would be even better - she showed that with her shows at the V Festival.

I`ve always thought of Radio1 as being pointless!

During the 80`s it was full of wally presenters (remember the wally?) it then tried to change and become 'rad' and 'street; but in the tradition of the BBC it fell well short!

Now it tries to be all things to all people. Society isn`t like that, especially these days where we have plenty of choice (ie Jazz FM, Kiss FM etc).

I always treat a Radio1 listener with a bit of suspicion!

Up until around 1992/93 radio 1 had about 20 Million listeners. Why on earth did the BBC go and screw it all up by sacking all the old DJ's who were household names just to try and attract younger listners, who were probably already listening. Everyone listened in those days. If it aint broke don't fix it!
