A very interesting interview audio clip of former Blue Peter director, producer and cameraman Alex Leger talking about Blue Peter memories on BBC Radio Cornwall last year (I think).

First few minute was about deep-fried spiders. Alex Leger was asked what did his presenter say when he asked them to eat them. He answered that it was Matt to have a go and crunched it because Alex himself had already had 4. Around 11.07 on, he was asked who was the presenter he loved working with because they were going for anything. He said they were all fabulous to work with and very adventurous but sometime too adventurous and it was Matt Baker hand-gliding.
Alex Leger says, 'Matt Baker is amazing at picking up skills which he can do physically. He can dance. He’s gymnast. He can do almost anything. He was learning how to hand-glide and within 4 days he was flying hand-glide but only just.' He was recollecting the day that left him and Nicola worried when the winch launch was pulled over 300 feet and he couldn’t see Matt. He added that he shouldn’t have worried cos Matt was quite expert doing that.

How would you be able to guess Matt is nearly 6 years (5 yrs & 11 months) younger than Si? He looks matured for his age. Anyway, he is a month younger than Ellie and I thought she was a few younger than Matt. How wrong I was and I discovered recently.

Housekeeping before first picspam of 2015

Matt has a new show that will air in February called “The Gift” and the trailer for it aired tonight. It’s a 4x60 minute show with Matt & Mel Giedroyc presenting stories of people trying to find a person they need to thank or say sorry to after many years have passed. Why he was doing this? He's a bit lazy boy to hit the gym and do workout as far as I know. He'd rather work on the family farm or do DIY to keep him active and fit instead. At first I thought he and the gang doing fitness workout for SR related.

I don’t think he would take his top off unless he is truly inspired or motivated by the rivals (hee…hee…). Or if it is his duty bound, being instructed by his OS/CF producers/directors. I remember Malvern Hill and Spring Water on CF in 2009. For him ice bucket challenge for charity would be just a minor thing comparing to being wrapped up with cold wet sheet for an hour, sitting in a very cold bathtub for 15 mins and then got icy cold shower. It wasn’t over yet another bucket of cold water plus ice crunches thrown at him. Poor little lamb but the good thing in that episode was they let him relaxing in a nice spa after having those experiments!

Thanks for the links to Matt’s new show ‘The Gift’ trailer and there is a lovely photo ofMatt and Mel on the BBC Media Centre website. He looks more like him, I mean it's better than over-airbrushed profile pics and I noted that they were wearing similar V-neck jumpers. He is very empathetic which reminds me of him interviewing a victim of domestic violence in Dandelion Time VT for SR 2011 on the OS. I think we would see his side of empathetic nature again. He would be a great interviewer no doubt about that. I normally do not sit on the sofa and watch telly after the OS in weekdays but I will definitely wait and watch all 4 episodes. I quite like the fact that it is like SB; just 2 presenters heading to different directions and cover the stories where they are.


I like the colour his jumper and the check shirt too, and yes it is a bit colourful as you said but he is gorgeous dude, isn’t he?

He’s slighter than expected, a good few inches shy of 6ft, and in his tan chinos he could be mistaken for any other well-bred dad on the school run. Albeit in better shape – his tight Breton T-shirt reveals those bulging guns he flaunted during his 2010 Strictly Come Dancing days.

The 37-year-old father-of-two is a walking advert for clean living and country air.
"For me work is a job, but the rural lifestyle, that’s my life," he explains. "The country idyll is not just a dream for me, it’s the reality. The minute I’m off air I’m straight in my car and back home as quick as possible."

Home for Matt and his physiotherapist wife Nicola, 36, is a rambling farmhouse in Hertfordshire, where they’re raising their children, Luke, seven, and Molly, five.
"We’ve got sheep, chickens, dogs – our dog’s just had eight puppies – a cat, tropical fish… We’ve also got orchards and paddocks, so if I’m not cutting the grass, I’m training the sheep. Or I’m in the wood yard building something.

"I’m a farmer’s son, so I was taught to get on with things and do them myself. But that’s a nightmare for my wife, because it means we’ve been doing the house up for a long time because of my work schedule."

Matt’s work is indeed hectic. After launching his career on Blue Peter in 2000, he’s co-hosted Countryfile since 2009, and joined The One Show in 2011, where five million viewers have fallen for his good natured charm.

His latest venture, a brand new four-part series called The Gift, which he’s doing with Mel Giedroyc, sees Matt travel the country meeting extraordinary people who somehow missed the chanceto say thank you or sorry when it mattered most. It’s all about life’s regrets.

"It’s something completely different for me," admits Matt. "I don’t smile much on this show, that’s for sure. It’s emotional. There’s a reason it’s on at 9pm, it doesn’t hold back. It’s almost like a counselling session."

Filming The Gift took 18 months and involved travel and long days, which, despite his Tigger-ish bounce, sometimes left Matt exhausted. He credits wife Nicola for being his rock.

"She’s phenomenal, my wife. She’s very patient. People say, 'How do you fit so much in?' But in truth I couldn’t if it wasn’t for her."

Matt believes the fact they got together before he was famous – they’re childhood sweethearts, having been a couple since they were 17 – really helped to cement them.
"I was fortunate to meet her before it all kicked off. She was part of the reason I got Blue Peter – she filmed my video audition. We’re a team."

The couple keep the passion alive with romantic holidays. "The kids will go to my parents" or Nicola’s mum’s and we’ll go off just the two of us. Exotic places like Oman, Mauritius and the Maldives, it’s been nice. Then at home Nicola likes a nice meal cooked for her, which fortunately I can do.’

Sweetly old fashioned, Matt shuns "the Twitter", has only just got Sky TV, and enjoys a whisky before bed. Despite the sunny persona, Matt insists he’s actually "a very serious person" and can blow his top like anyone else.

"When I feel people aren’t working at their potential, that winds me up. I’m a real perfectionist, I don’t like slacking. If I get really annoyed I’ll bawl at people, I have a temper on me, but most of the time I keep it under control."

Matt relaxes by painting – he proudly shows us two of his own fairly accomplished oil paintings of some horses and a landscape on his phone – and by keeping up the gymnastics he excelled at as a child, but was forced to quit aged 14 due to suddenly developing anaemia.

"I’m very physical and I have to do two or three good sessions a week or I get really wound up. It’s the best stress reliever. I do handstands and back flips at home, I’ve got crash mats, we’ve got a big climbing frame and I’ve got ropes in the trees."

Luke and Molly are aware Daddy is on telly, saying good night to him on screen while watching The One Show, and are used to strangers wanting his photo. And generally, Matt is happy being stopped in the street.

"I’m from the north east – everybody talks to everybody! It doesn’t matter who they are. When I first got to London I went on the tube and asked someone, 'Hiya, you alright?' They got up and moved seats! So I feel at home with people saying hello."
Matt shrugs off being any kind of "housewives’ favourite", but is very proud of his devoted army of fans, the so-called "Bakerettes".

"They’re a wonderful group of ladies," gushes Matt. "They do things for charity, they write a very professional annual, and they all met through – I suppose – liking me. It’s a weird thing."

Not weird at all, Matt. Now where do we sign up to be a Bakerette…?

Evening all

The weather for filming didn't look too good,it was horrible for filming in veg garden, matt was very wrapped up, when he went inside to help with the soup making and eating he was running in his socks and he got to play with some diy in the farm house. Poor Eliie looked frozen out and about on the poem stones trail

Lucky you Sky. I wanted to buy a hard copy but don’t know which paper to buy. He’s so lovely and yeah he seems proud of his troops and impressed with the annuals so far. Might be looking forward to thud 2015 annual…haha…You got to love him calling Nicola ‘phenomenal’. I like to see him doing backflips and handstands but I don’t see though having a temper is a dark side of a person. I suppose we are all human and no one is a saint but to me how you can smartly control your temper is the matter. I do have temper as well but don’t let it show so no one could easily see your weaknesses.
