No Matt on tonight’s the OS.

I got to log on to the OS fb and twitter to find out why. FB page said Matt is under weather and twitter said he is ill. Poor Matt… he got sweaty, probably roasted in the studio yesterday evening. The One Show Village Green is on 3 Aug next Wednesday; and he is on Countyfile Live on Thursday 4 Aug.

Gymnastics - Artistic starts from 6 August at Rio Olympic Arena (Arena Olímpica do Rio) where he will be presenting and commentating live so I am a slightly concerned. Hope he get well soon.

I was out thurs evening so missed tos, so when I was checking the fb page and saw he hasn't been on as he wasn't well.

Hopefully it's a 24 hour bug and he'll be fighting fit soon, haven’t seen if he was cf-ing yesterday.

He was looking fab on the 18th great stubbleage, he was looking pretty good the last couple of weeks.

It was an hour long One Show on the 29th of June with guest Simon Pegg (loved him since Spaced, Hot Fuzz one of my favourite films, and loving his work on Star Trek). Loved Matt describing the smell of a comet as being “Very much like the Jorvik Centre”. He’d know, being a life model there

Olympics Games without Mitch commentating on gymnastics would be sad

but the games would be fantastic so he would be very proud of the British team and the Dutch team. Men’s Team GB won bronze in London 2012 was the moment he has been waiting for many years, he said and was very proud of the GB boys.

Don’t know yet how many Russian gymnastics can compete. I hope they all clean and eligible to take part in the games.

good to see the gymnastic on mainly good times only a few late night ones , will still record them all

Lets hope that any Russian athletes that competes and win are clean, there will be huge problems if they aren't

Yesterday the One Show Village Special was very lively. Can’t believe there is no cash machine. Matt on the farm with cattles was nice and unexpected. Beautiful flowers, liked the dance… bed race looks fun. Al said good luck to Matt at Rio 2016. Bless her!

To catch up gymnastics men’s in actions last night
Gymnastics - Artistic: Men's qualification Sub-Division 1
Gymnastics - Artistic: Men's qualification Sub-Division 2 including Team GB
Gymnastics - Artistic: Men's qualification Sub-Division 3

The best Olympics qualification results last night for the British men gymnastics with men’s team final, 2 AA finals, 2 pommel finals, 2 floor finals and 1. It was a bit of shaky start with a few mishaps on vault landings but compensated and secured 8 men finals.

Hope they can iron them out in the final, preform clean routines and not to miss out their chances of medals whatever the colours may be.

It was interesting to see Nile qualified ahead of Epke but it must have been very hard for Epke to maintain the right balance between gymnastic training hours and study hours as a medical student. Another interesting final is will Uchimura contain his AA title and we are going to see Louis and Max go head to head on pommel. Very exciting!

Felt sorry for the French gymnast whose leg broken on vault landing. All head work, hours and hours of training and sacrifices didn’t pay off when he got that freaky accident.

As always, great commentary yesterday

but for me 3 things were missing – Mitch’s soft-spoken knowledgeable commentary, Matt’s informative and radio reporting and the banters between them.

Missed all of the men's 1st sub div and part of the GB ones as I couldn't find it on the red buttons it keep moving around. Fingers crossed for the final and they all do well.
Saw the French gymnast fall landing the vault, it was really horrible seeing his leg, don't know if he'll be able to come back from that. So disappointing for him as he missed 2012 due to a break in his other leg

It was strange with just Christine and Craig, was missing Mitch in there as well.
Missed the GB ladies as I was watching Andy. Both men's and ladies making to the final and some individuals great going . Lovely hearing matt in the commentary box

Brilliant result for Max and Louis, so happy for them both,

would have liked to see Louis get the Gold. But he seems happy with getting the silver. I'm really fed up with the gymnastic being moved from channel to channel. Fab that Andy got his second gold.

Claire: I am delighted to welcome to our team here in Rio, Matt Baker, himself is a former British Junior Gymnastics Champion. He knows this sport inside out. And Matt, we were discussing earlier today, quite a complicated format this team final so explain to us in a sentence or two.
Matt: Yes. Hello Claire and welcome to the Olympic Arena. This is the first day of final so we are starting with the men’s team so the boys talking there. How is gonna work? Each country has a team of five gymnasts. Basically, they nominate 3 gymnastics to go upon each piece of apparatus and this is where it’s getting incredibly tough because every single score of three performances count towards the team total. So it carried over 18 performances in all, 6 pieces of apparatus so at the end of the competition the country with the biggest score wins. But there is a lot of stakes because if you fall, even that counts.

There was an excellent tribute to the late Mitch Fanner by Matt on behalf of the BBC Sport Team.
Claire: And Matt before we get into the actions, I know we want to pay tribute to Mitch Fenner, your first Olympics with our team, huge part of BBC commentary team but also huge figure in Gymnastics.
Matt: Absolutely! I have to say it doesn’t feel the same without Mitch here. We only lost him just a matter of the week before the Olympics and he loves the first day of team final. For those who don’t know, just hear Mitch’s voice he so ingrain in the world of Gymnastics so much so. And I am talking globally as well because he has made big input as a coach in the team of the Netherlands and they managed under Mitch’s helps to get to the Olympics, get the team here for the very first time. They always had individuals who could compete at world stage but they never managed put together as a team and Mitch managed to do that. And he got the Netherlands here. They finished in tenth, still got a couple of individuals in the individual apparatus finals as well. So there is a real good feeling here. We just wanna keep going with Mitch’s legacy. And yes, it won’t be the same without him but we gonna try and do him proud, and just keep going. We were honoured to learn from him. We just wanna keep that going really.

Claire: He would have been so excited, you know. And in terms of Britian’s chances of the medal, they took the bronze in London 2012. Even harder this time round?
Matt: Well, you know here Louis’s talked there, realistically top five. You know what; they are so very close. This is gonna be a real mix. It could go anywhere. I mean we got current Olympic champion in China, we got the current world champion in Japan. Great Britain, they have got the silver at the world championships, we got the second highest qualifier as well and European champion in Russia. This could go anywhere. The five teams and all of them deserve something.

The One Show is to celebrate 10 Anniversary on the return of Mr Baker (next week?). I remember Matt made his first appearance wearing a big pair of glasses on the One Show on the very first episode through City Hospital 2006 as a reporter cos I started watching the One Show since 2006. The One Show should show his previous appearances before he actually returns on the green sofa as a permanent host and definitely the One Show Rickshaw challenge and many, many more. Don’t think they will have enough airtime to put togother in an hour show. Maybe a week at least celebration help. I can recall Myleene left after her first daughter was born. At that time there were still teletext page available on telly. Some of teletext posters criticized her for taking her baby to the OS studio, calling her Klass woman.

I was keep wondering when are they are going to celebrate. Now we got the exciting news!

Actually 2016 is also 10 years on Matt joined the BBC Sport gymnastics commentary team (Mitch and Christine) as his took the permanent seat since 2006 but no one ever interview the man himself. But I did the research.

It was really a good away Olympics Games and what the outstanding achievements from our Team GB – 6 medals in Artistic Gymnastics alone so the figure doubled up from London 2012. No wonder Matt was so excited just talking about it on the OS before he was off to Rio. But sadly, there was no one cuddling Matt in the commentary box as in London 2012 when the men’s team won bronze. I really missed Mitch’s voice. I really did cos I kept hearing what he would have said while watching live actions at the Rio Olympics Arena. I couldn't help it. Beth and Dan were keeping Mitch's seat warm joining Matt and Christine in the commentary box, keeping his legacy alive. One of the greatest of the BBC Sport at the Rio Olympics Games. I bet they did high tens and group hugs at the backstage. No doubt they all have had a few fantastic days out there in Rio.
