I’ve just read one of Matt’s behind-the-scenes articles on the CF mag website. I found it v fascinating to read especially the pieces he mentioned about his personal experiences as a young lad on the water, being a marine explorer and his connection with RNLI. All took me by surprise.

I have always had a respect for water, and especially the sea, which is no doubt due to the experiences I have when I come in contact with it.

My first vivid memory of water is being engulfed by the wave machine at the local leisure centre. It’s not that I’m not a confident swimmer, it’s just that I often end up having to get myself out of a watery situation. For example, as a 10-year-old marine explorer on the last day of our holiday, I was mesmerised by a squid that enticed me into a whirlpool. From the centre of the vortex I was screaming for my dad, who heroically came to rescue me. Our legs were cut to shreds by the jagged rocks but we both managed to escape.

This story did have a little bonus – the airline took pity on my dad and I, and gave us an upgrade on the way home as we couldn’t bend our shredded knees. At the time I couldn’t believe they had TVs on planes.
At college I joined the sea kayaking club and took to the sea on the first lesson, squeezed into a carbon fibre, streamlined kayak. I was unaware of the advantage of choosing a less stylish, plastic, ferry-type vessel and spent the entire lesson inverted, gasping for air as my kayak was so tight I couldn’t get my legs out.

These early experiences didn’t put me off and set me in good stead for watery filming adventures. Blue Peter was known for its connection with the RNLI and so am I, as I’ve been rescued twice for real.

One occasion was when I was filming off the south coast in an old-fashioned galleon ship (with no engine). A surprise storm came in and we were hit by a freak wave. We all slid down the deck and some of the tapes we’d just recorded went overboard – Davy Jones’ Locker now contains the footage of me sword fighting in period costume. We were all rescued in a hairy boat-to-boat transfer, including my dog Meg, wrapped in a blanket. But my list of H2O adventures, excitement and close calls doesn’t stop there. While speeding up the Thames to cover the London Marathon, our inflatable boat launched off the wake of a passing vessel, projecting our soundman into the air. Fortunately, he landed back in the boat but his sound equipment wasn’t so lucky and the rest of our coverage was very quiet.

But my closest call was scuba diving and filming off the coast of Egypt, when my equipment malfunctioned and I inhaled a large quantity of the Red Sea. Thankfully, my dive buddy saw exactly what was going on and saved my life. But please don’t let me put you off – after all, I’m still here to tell my tales.

I used to think that Matt is adventurous and as a trained stuntman on BP who wouldn’t mind to take a few risks but I never thought that he had ever experienced such mini adventures of his own as a young lad. Sometimes it makes me wonder what his autography would be like. I bet he still has tons of tales that he never tells us just yet.

Anyway I am so pleased to know that Matt has won the rural presenter of the year (again?). (I checked CF mag ‘Secret of Davon’ at WHS this morning and saw this with lovely photo but no article of Matt in this edition so I didn’t buy it. Or have I missed it when I flipped through it?)

And if I remember correctly Matt won ‘Favorite Countryside TV Presenter’ last year voted by the readers of the Radio Times’. (Correct me if I am wrong.) So the titles he has won in two years were slightly different and was being voted by the readers of 2 different magazines, wasn’t it?

I also found CF mag editorial's Britain’s Sexiest Farmer on the website. When I saw the captions under Matt’s photo I couldn’t help myself but to laugh out loud. I was v tempted to write a cheeky comment below by just saying he wasn’t nominated cos’s he’s overqualified to fit in that category.


I missed the first CF episode and first few minutes of second one. Do you know what the first one was? I saw Matt coppicing in the second CF. The last one was Forest of Dean episode. The bit, Matt and the artwork on the hanging glass was being cut off for the ad.

3 more CF episodes are on the yesterday channel this Sunday from 2-5pm again. I'll watch any episodes Matt's on. If not, I'd do something else. And it seems the Matt clips on Sunday CF gonna be shorter or more voiceover so I’d watch DOI on telly and Matt clips on the iplayer.

By the way did anyone notice Matt’s ties on the OS this week? I love them…like the shirts too.

Emma - Matt won the same award from Countryfile magazine this year as he did last year. He did also win a different one form Radio Times - but it is the 2nd year in a row he's won this one too

A good cf, Witley court would have been a amazing place to see before it burnt down, still looks impressive , the church was beautiful

Lovely mattage, the bath was huge, like that matt was asking for a bottle of wine while he was in the bath. He does love his food scoffing down the pudding at the end,

Matt looked great in his red shirt and nice bit of unbttonage with bonus standing up playing table tennis. The stubble is coming along very nicely

Richard was a good guest, funny that they showed the clip of lillian saying she didn't like notting hill least she seemed to like the new film.

As January was a light month for Matt on Countryfile it’s straight into another week of The One Show. They’d really settled into the new studio and whilst I can’t explain why the audience figures for the show have also generally been higher this year! The show is getting high 4m audiences most days and averaging 22% audience share. The first half year Matt and Alex were on the show together it was getting 17-18% audience share - last year it was 20%. So generally up all round which is great news for them

It’s the 13th of January and the guest was Harry Hill (it started with a sketch where Matt turned into him - unfortunately this was another broken episode and the first 10 minutes were broken so this is missing… )

Nice to see him in less layers in December. Maybe weather wasn't v cold as in December 2012.Very nice waistcoats and I do like his velvet jackets too but I am no fan of I am no fan of Chris, Marty and Mike’s favourite pattern/flowery shirts.

I watched Jane and Chris’s the Perfect Day last night. Chris said when he skated, he felt he was flying and he likes gymnastics and the feeling of free. So made me thought of what Matt has said to Zoe and Richard in ‘gold for gold’ interview during Olympics 2012 cos Matt mentioned about the free feeling when he did gymnastics. Seems they share some attributes in this respect and I think gymnastics is transferrable on ice to do lifts and tricks.

I enjoy watching winter Olympics. Watched ice-skating live (I think) on the red-button. Shame I didn’t get the chance to see an experienced biathlete Matt in action on CF in 2010, not even in a clip show but I will watch biathlon (maybe visualizing Matt goes cross-country skiing, shooting and snowboarding.).

Looking forward to see Matt on CF on Sunday… Hope there will be bonus Matt on 3CF episodes on Yesterday too.

Emma - I like your collating what Matt wore on The One Show in December It's a good record to look back on. Impressively there was only one jumper in the month too
