Walter may not have had a clue about Europe but don't kid yourself that his job wasn't to win a european trophy. There's no way the mint spent all that money (well we now know it was other peoples money) to win a weak Scottish league.

You would see them in photo's in the newspaper completely out of their faces....

That era was long gone by the time he came back & you could clearly see that he cared more about Europe....

Every time he was humiliated in Europe, not a peep from fans, he's beating Celtic in the league.... Different climate when he came back though....

The reality was Walter Smith was just not cut out for Top level European football!!

For example. if Rangers were still up there & he was manager he would have Rangers being the dominant force again...

As TommyNooka so rightly pointed out earlier Rangers weren't paying £2m for Boli, £4.3m for Gascoigne, £2.3m for Laudrup, £4m for Duncan Ferguson and the other fees they were paying in order to just win the Scottish Premier Division. They, and the other players that were bought, were purchased in order to try and make Rangers a European force but it simply never happened.

Yep. Murray and there fans were desperate to get the cup that Celtic have won and were spending plenty to try and make it happen. Problem was they had a manager who was so far out of his depth in European football and they couldnt even get out of the group.


You mean 4-5-1 defending for 90 mins. Great tactics. Plenty of managers can set up a side with the aim of not getting beat and to simply just defend.

I'm asking you to prove me wrong. You say that Barca never had many decent chances, the UEFA website says that only a great performance from McGregor stopped Rangers getting a hiding.

As for the CL final last season I don't really remember much of it. Was at the cup final the same day then helping drown the sorrows of a Hibee pal.

Europe meant so much more to the Cardigan the second time round that in in the 2006/7 they won 1 out of 4 European matches, in 2007/8 they won 7 out of 19 matches, in 2008/9 they won 0 out of 2 matches, in 2009/10 they won 0 out of 6 matches and in 2010/11 they won 1 out of 10 matches.

9 matches out of 41, a win percentage of 21.9%.
